Do I buy a 5800X...

Ok, so probably a bad idea, but I keep coming back to it.
When I built my machine, I didnt have the option of waiting, so it was done literally a few weeks before the new RTX 3000 series came out, shortly followed by the new 5000 series AMD CPUs.

Im not fussed over the GPU, these change all the time, whats eating at me is the 5800X cpu, and the more I see benchmarks etc, the more I feel gutted I didnt get one. Basically same price as the 3800XT I did get, but -wipes the floor- with it in every benchmark ive seen

Now, i'm wrestling with the idea of buying a 5800X, dont really want to do it as an upgrade through PCS/RMA so would mean installing it myself (which ive never done before) and also then repasting.

Its another £400 on top of a machine ive already spent well over 2K on, and to be completely honest with myself, does everything I need it to.... but the 5800X would do it better.

Both video editing and gaming would benefit from it... (also considering increasing RAM to 32GB) and when I started playing with 1440p video edits and 4K video edits my render times started jumping quite significantly... so I think I would actually benefit from it.

Im just not sure I actually -need- it, and the installation and reconfiguring BIOS (would I need to do anything to BIOS?) are all things i've got no knowledge on other than physically where the chip goes on the board...

Is this just FOMO getting to me?

The 3800XT is still great a CPU mate, it depends on what kind of performance you're experiencing or where you think it's lacking?

I'm stuck with a Intel processor so it could be worse (I need it for work, some proprietary software that currently doesn't play nice with the Ryzens)

The actual switch of the CPU is fairly straight forward. It shouldn't require any configuration at all.

You've got a reasonable cooler on there to support it too so I think you are good to go.

You would need some paste, Grizzly Kryonaut is a good option.

Just take your time with removing the cooler.

The question you need to ask yourself is if the gains are going to be worth the outlay. The actual switching out of the hardware is a fairly straight forward affair.

With the RAM, if the projects are using some effects or quite long for the previews then you may get a significant benefit from the RAM. Have you set up the second drive as a cache option for the software? That can have a huge impact on previews etc too.

I think my biggest benefit would be in rendering times for videos, and increased fps in some games...but its not like ive got bad ones now (as you say, the 3800XT is a good CPU...the 5800X just smashes it out the park )

Personally changing the CPU is my least favourite part of hardware installation. You just have to take your time and be a little meticulous which I'm not very good at

Removing thermal paste is the most awkward part but if you're careful it's fine. It's not difficult it's just annoying

Second M.2 drive is a games drive, i have two 500GB SSD in there as well (SanDisk one and a Kingston one) and one is set up as a cache drive.

Im using Premiere Pro (and have Adobe Creative Suite so i've got Aftereffects, lightroom etc etc...)
Im thinking RAM should probably be where I look next... and most of it is just me feeling left out as I couldnt wait for the 5000 series to be released....

The video editing is a hobby, but i'm learning more as I go along and building on it, the main use is gaming and general multitasking stuff/home entertainment etc

Just to be the boring guy I feel like I should mention the warranty side of things. Terms and Conditions state:

We reserve the right to suspend the warranty or refuse service if your Case, Motherboard, CPU or BIOS have been replaced without authorisation.
Any tampering, repair or modification by unauthorised personnel voids the warranty.

So if you buy from an external vendor, you're potentially losing technical support and your warranty.

I would create a folder on your game drive and try it as a cache (if there's a bit of space). The cache drive doesn't need to be exclusive, it only needs to have priority when in use as a cache drive. It may net you some speed when working with higher resolutions. Definitely worth a try as a free alternative.

Otherwise, I would agree that RAM is probably the shot coming with your current use. The CPU should be fine.... but I do understand that want

I'm thinking about this too (as an upgrade through PCS), but my system has a 2700x on a X470. Part of me knows I'd barely notice the difference in gaming, part of me worries about how much of the 5800x's grunt I'd even see on that mobo.

RAM is also the cheaper option compared to a new CPU, but my thoughts were RAM would benefit the video stuff, but CPU would benefit gaming as well so i'd get more out of it. I had always planned to upgrade the CPU anyway, just not for a good 7 or 8 years (at least).

I'll play with switching the cache folder location to the firecuda, see how much that boosts video stuff.

Honestly Youtube is a great resource for this kind of thing, just watch a couple videos and that should give you an idea of how to do it

Cpu switch is easy and you can recoup a good chunk of the 3800XT cost by selling it. So i’d say go for it.

The mounting of coolers onto AMD however... i’m not a fan of at all and it is easy to mess up the thermal paste job. But... you’re going to need to learn to repaste at some point anyway.

Ive repasted my CPU in a laptop before, just never changed chips over.
That doesnt mean to say I did a good job of it!! (And might also explain why my last laptop died at about 3 years old!)

You lift the arm up and pull the chip out and place the new one in and close the arm. That is it, ofc... you then have to remount the cooler etc, but the physical process of the cpu is easy, there is even an arrow on it to match up.

You will definitely need a bios update though.

I'd assume I would have to get the bios update from PCS, otherwise its a dead warranty...
Would it be supplied with the chip? A Mod might know... i've put the idea back on the afterburner for now, otherhalf isnt keen on me spending more! But I tend to win these kind of arguements if I eventually decide to go for it...
