What's the budget?
  • <£500 will probably be IPS
  • £500-£900 will be 1440p, ultrawide 1440p OLED or mini-LED, or very high-end 4K IPS
  • >£1000 will be 4K OLED
Dell Alienware AW3225QF (4K 32" OLED) - £989
Looking around £800. Are any of those I linked worth looking at ?

LG UltraGear Monitor 32GP850-, 31.5-inch, Nano IPS Display, 165Hz (O/C 180Hz), 1ms (GtG), 2560 x 1440 px, DCI-P3 98% (Typ.), HDR10, AMD FreeSync Premium, Nvidia G-Sync compatible, Stylish Design https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0BFBQR...r_apin_ct_DV7G8S53Y87YGKGMJTEE&language=en_US
This is 1440p which would be totally pointless for your build, far too small

Gigabyte M32UC-EK 3‎1.5 Inch Curved VA 1500R 4K UHD (3840 x 2160) 144Hz (160Hz OC) 1ms FreeSync Premium Pro HDMI 2.1 Gaming Monitor, Black https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0B5356...r_apin_ct_F5MDV62SQV86PVBX3P96&language=en_US
This is outdated tech, wouldn't recommend, inferior for this level of build.

LG UltraGear 4K Gaming Monitor 32GR93U, 31.5 inch, 4K, 144Hz, 1ms GtG, IPS Display, HDR 10, NVIDIA G-Sync & AMD FreeSync compatible, Smart Energy Saving, Displayport, HDMI https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0CCG35...r_apin_ct_7NPNNT3AX6PBRYTAQEAS&language=en_US
This would be an "ok". If you really want 4k, then it's an option, but it's by no means a good monitor, it's one of the very early 4k gaming monitors which are all really outdated nowadays. It's HDR400 which isn't HDR, HDR600 is universally recognised as the lowest to achieve HDR. It would be an extreme entry level monitor on quite a high end build, so your experience would be entry level as the monitor would limit the capabilities of the PC. It's a system and all has to balance from input to output.

MSI MAG 341CQP QD-OLED 34 Inch UWQHD Curved Gaming Monitor - 1800R, 3440 x 1440 Quantum Dot OLED Panel, 175Hz / 0.03ms, 99% DCI-P3, ΔE≤2, DisplayHDR True Black 400, KVM - DP 1.4a, HDMI 2.1, USB Type-C https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0CRZDP...r_apin_ct_PV1E5BVDYWPWGYQJM273&language=en_US
Out of the pick this would be the one I'd choose, it's just an entire different league to all the others and give a true HDR experience, plus OLED contrast ratio and colours. The others don't even come close.

Cheers Spyder. Is there anything other than the ones I have picked that you would go for?

I would 100% be looking at OLED

And the price range your in excludes you from 4k. IMHO though, 4k vs Ultrawide performance wise, I think Ultrawide is a far richer and more immersive gaming experinece.

So I'd be looking at QD-OLED V2 or V3 panels

The MSI you linked is really the best of the new panels within the budget range.

Cheers mate. As the MSI and the Dell are roughly the same price I am down to them two now. Which would you say?

In fact it would be remiss not to mention this one

The MSI above is a more all rounder, it's a brand new OLED panel which means far better text clarity and better burn in protection. It's a really good solid all round performer.

BUT, if you're purely interested in gaming, this was the absolute king of the 1st Gen OLED Ultrawides from a gaming perspective and although it's £30 over budget most places, if you have a hunt, you may be able to find it cheaper, there are often vouchers to be found for Dell direct.

I have a 4k gaming monitor which I used off an on with an old 1440p gaming monitor before moving up to superwide.
I always chose 1440p over 4k. 4k really isn't all it's cracked up to be, I prefer the performance vs visual fidelity of Ultrawide any day of the week.

I've got the original Samsung G95T (G9) which has HDR1000, it was the first gaming superwide really, there were a couple before this, but they were limited to 120Hz and more aimed at productivity.

Since experiencing superwide (ultrawide is slightly narrower) I could never go back to normal aspect ratio.

It's the closest I've ever felt to being in a VR experience on a monitor. It's mind boggling, literally hits you physically, I feel tingling in my belly when the game starts, and it totally amplifies my excitement every step of the way.

Normal aspect ratio I now find utterly mundane.

Wow. A bit out of my price range but I do get what you mean. And now I’m sat looking at the MSI but there is a dell ultra wide also for the same price.

Alienware AW3423DWF 34 Inch WQHD (3440x1440) 21:9 1800R Curved Gaming Monitor, 165Hz, QD OLED, 0.1ms, AMD FreeSync Premium Pro, 99.3% DCI-P3, HDR400, 2x DisplayPort, 1x HDMI, 5x USB, 3 Year Warranty https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0BHTDD...r_apin_ct_F949NT4FMV5Y1DMK9ER4&language=en_US

If you use TopCashBack / Quidco for a purchase direct from Dell, you can (probably, but never guaranteed) get 5% / 9% cash back respectively.

That’s the one I linked earlier. It’s a gen 1 panel so sucks for productivity as text is quite blurry.

but if it’s simply for gaming it’s a better option

Is this the same G9?

Samsung Odyssey G9 LC49G95TSSRXXU 49" 1000R Curved Gaming Monitor - 240hz, 1ms, 1440p QHD, Gsync, QLED, HDMI, Displayport, USB https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B08WXGK...r_apin_ct_JH8QXDKQ2EQ60D5NDH63&language=en_US
yep, that’s the G9, there is only one model. Ionically the price has only gone up on it since I bought it, I paid £870 for mine

i wouldn’t buy the original G9 nowadays, its been vastly superseded by much better panels

This would be the modern replacement which is QLED which greatly improved the HDR backlight blooming issue on the original, then you go up to the top tier OLED version

And be wary of reviews, the ones about the display needing to be powered off after a period of time was a known issue on early firmwares, people just haven't got a clue about modern monitors. Always be wary of reviews, people tend to only post negative, and you have to syphon out the ones who just have zero understanding of defect rates, and how to actually use them.

If you're seriously limited by budget, then I'd still take an OLED Ultrawide vs the original G9, I think you'd find the OLED far more engaging.

OLED is one of those things you won't appreciate just how much better it is than any other panel unless you see it up close and personal, it really is a game changer, especially where HDR is concerned as each pixel is it's own dimming zone rather than on QLED panels where you have a group of pixels per dimming zone. It's also that OLED pixels can fully turn off, so black is ACTUALLY black, whereas on IPS, black is just a lower brightness so there will always be a certain amount of blooming / halo effect.

Just additionally, little tidbit, when buying monitors IMHO it's worth checking out open box units from reputable sellers like Amazon Warehouse. Often you can get a substantial markdown without it affecting manufacturers warranty at all.

I buy an awful lot of my stuff open box. All it means is it's either items that have been returned for whatever reason (not for warranty reasons, simply cancelled orders), sometimes the packaging is damaged. Occasionally there are parts missing (like a manual or remote or something like that) but they implicitly say that on the listing. But every time I've ordered it's a brand spanking new item (which is proven by registration).

The other bonus with Amazon is their returns policy is so good, they never ask questions. With monitors, it's not unusual to receive a unit with dead pixels or that just fails outright. It's impossible to know every unit leaving the factory is 100% perfect, they can only stress it over a specific short period and release it to market. So it's always worth buying from somewhere that has a good returns policy.

From my experience, avoid Scan, Overclockers are very good, Amazon is probably the best of the bunch, Curry's aren't too bad and convenient if you have one locally.

I was wrong, I paid £940 for mine around Christmas 2021, can't believe it was that long ago, I still turn into a over excited child every time I get close to it.
