Disappointing description for the Vortex VII

Hello All,

Recently I got a Vortex VII and while great I've had a few little issues, the major one was discovered as I was looking to make sure all settings are set correct for gaming ect (like SLI which was turned off) one of which was g-sync.

However I could not find the settings in the Nvidia Control panel, so I called up to which they advised I didn't have one.

Now for my issue.

Right now its displayed as:

Vortex Series: 17.3" 120 Hz 90% NTSC Full HD Matte LED Widescreen (1920x1080)
or
Vortex Series: 17.3" Matte 4K IPS LED Widescreen (3840x2160)(No G-Sync)

Now in the other laptops in the months and years some have come with G-Sync considering the price and the size and other laptops having this technology like the Acer 21" 120 Hz laptop from a year ago+ I thought this would come with so when one screen said is does not come with G-Sync i would then think the other does.

However it didn't so a feature I thought I had..I didn't.

Now if i sell two cars,
Ford, 2 litres, black, 3 years old
Ford 2 litres, red, 3 years old (no mud flaps included)

You would think the first car would have Mud flaps... if both said no mud flaps or neighter say it then the person may need to dig deeper or call and ask.

Now I have a a £3,500 laptop which is very fast but I've been left with a little bit of a sour taste in my mouth, I'm sure others would make the same mistake but I'm sure some will disagree as it was not stated it came with, but if I say purple unicorn you think of a purple unicorn, so if two choices and one says no G-sync then the though of G-Sync feature is in my head....

Regards,

Gavin Brierley

What were your full specs?

I have to say I've seen that quite a few times and always assumed the first had gsync. It would be going straight back for a refund if I was in your position.

Although I sympathise and do agree that there is room for ambiguity in the way those two statements are written, it is very easy to check the model of the display you are choosing by checking the little "i" icon to the right of the drop down selection box. Not that this is meant to suggest you are at fault here, but similarly to what you mentioned in your car analogy, in my opinion its worth always asking/checking.

Did you feed this back to PCS directly when you were discussing it with them?

As SlimCini points out, if G-Sync was a major factor in your decision to purchase you can send it back.

The configurator says "Screen Model N/A" for the 1080p screen, so the OP's point still applies in my opinion.

I too would have assumed the laptop came with gsync.

PCS really need to tidy up their configurators.

I can see the potential ambiguity here and I agree that it was unwise for PCS to say one monitor did not have G-Sync and not also say that the other option didn't. Perhaps they imagined that the 'No G-Sync' applied to both?

If G-Sync had been that important to me I'd have made sure to carefully check the specs or ask PCS before buying, it's always a mistake to assume.

I also think that if this is a showstopper the OP should send it back whilst he still can and make sure PCS understand why so that they can prevent this from happening again.

GSync raises the cost by a couple of hundred pounds, so I would definitely raise this with PCS as I agree it reads that it's included and I always assumed it was.

Hopefully that's their immediate action to stop others having the same incorrect impression, and they'll follow up with a proper reply to you shortly once it's been drafted and approved by X supervising staff - or whatever their processes are for complaints.

I agree that G-Sync or no G-Sync is a big issue, simply because of the enormous price difference it puts on monitors. (The same applies to the built-in display of a laptop, of course). Quite often this important difference (none, Freesync or G-Sync) doesn't fit in properly with the usual dimensions (size, refresh rate, response time) that e-commerce sites are designed to display/search for.

I noticed this problem today while checking prices for a monitor I'm interested in, on a completely unrelated website which is nothing to do with PCS. The monitor was advertised as the AOC AG241QG, which has G-Sync. But the specs made no mention of G-Sync, which made me suspect that what they were actually selling was the QX model, with no G-Sync. This could have been an honest mistake or mislisting: on the other hand, it could have been a sneaky attempt to rope in people looking for the G-Sync model, in the hope that at least some of them would buy it (perhaps because someone in the pub who does know their stuff recommended this model) and not notice. It put me off buying from them.

The impression I get of PCS is that they don't work in that sneaky way, because they choose not to. These forums are full of very knowledgeable people, and they actively recommend posting your spec to the forums (which did my first idea of a build a lot of good!). This gives me the impression that PCS are - in the best possible way! - a "PC-geek" company, who like to know all the technical details of what they're talking about, and sell to a lot of people who also know what they're talking about.

I hope that you can get this resolved with PCS: I'm sure that calling them and explaining that the ambiguous listing gave you the impression that you were getting G-Sync would resolve things.

***update***

they have removed the "no g-sync" from the second screen, no response however,

Newbie here - but I've seen it said on the forums that the best way to get a quick response (which your situation obviously demands) from PCS is to call them rather than emailing. I called them when some weirdness prevented my card payment from going through a couple of weeks ago, and found them very helpful.

PCS have always been disappointing for panel options IMO. They always seem a few steps behind in getting the latest options. It's a shame as the rest of the configuration options are pretty good.

I still don't understand why 1440p isn't the go to configuration on high end chassis.

Thank you for your comments on the issues and this has been the subject of discussion internally. I would like to first explain the reason why the information was provided in the way it was.

I do want to highlight that this listing was in no way intended to mislead about the inclusion of Gsync, we do typically get a healthy volume of customer queries about panel properties and Gsync options and we will always try to use any feedback to improve our customers’ ability to get the correct information.

Generally, if one of our Chassis has a Gsync option, it will be listed in the following; the blurb for the chassis and the GPU models that support it. We will typically list supported panels for our chassis that are tried and tested AND are in consistent saleable supply.
We do sometimes include distinctions against the panels if something does not fit with the above feature set. In some cases, panels are not compatible.

In this instance, the chassis had moved across a generational step where we went from listing the chassis including a 4K Gsync model to NOT being able to provide a Gsync 4K panel. I understand from the call notes that the OP had been watching this chassis across that generational jump so may have noted the change. When we listed the newer iteration, we removed any Gsync from the product blurb and the GPU selections (where other chassis maintain these listings).

I do want to assure you that you have not been charged for any Gsync features on the 120Hz screen. You have paid the correct amount for the parts ordered.

I understand from the phone call that you are otherwise very happy with the system and have taken to personalising and making use of its heavy-duty feature set. I apologise if any confusion has been caused and based on the feedback from your phone call (before OP started the thread) we marked it for internal evaluation.

Many Thanks,
Mustafa

As I've said in the email, I understand the explanation and I do not think it was on purpose, but since other agree with my self that it looked like it did, plus the same chassis in the US does come with a 120hz g-sync screen,

See here:

CLEVO P870TM1-G Core™ Processor, Intel® Z370, 17.3" QHD 120Hz 5ms Matte with G-Sync, MXM III Graphics, Laptop Barebone
CLEVO P870TM1-G Core™ Processor, Intel® Z370, 17.3" 4K QFHD Matte with G-Sync, MXM III Graphics, Laptop Barebone (+$148)

It leaves a sour taste, and i'm still disappointed and feel aggrieved.

I thought I made the right choice in screens.. perhaps not so.

The laptop does seem very very good, some slight issues with CPU core heat and random reboots but I'm monitoring.

A response would be nice...

Also in my other thread I'm having issues with thermal throttling and I've had to de-clock the cores to 4.2 Ghz, if I overclock the cores and put it under load the temp shoots up and the laptop suddenly powers off (dead instantly)

This had also happened once or twice in normal operation with a overclock, and i will continue to monitor and discuss in the other thread.

so PCSpecialist do you have a response to me.

The forums aren't an official support channel and PCS staff posts here are quite rare. It's mostly for customers like you and me to have community-based discussions. I suggest you email / phone them for a reponse.
