Desktop Background Partial Black Screen

Hi all,

Been enjoying my new PC and have been using it with no problems, however, I have a new phenomena which has started and it's very irritating.

The desktop background has a large black section on one monitor, see the picture attached. If you drag a box in there or drop a desktop icon in it, it has a strange graphic effect going on. Occasionally it pops over to the other monitor and does the same thing in there. Occasionally it isn't there when I start the old girl up.

The most recent piece of software installed was Conan Exiles, I don't remember it doing it before that but I could be wrong.

Any help greatly appreciated. Spec below:

My guess is it's windows not playing nice with the portion of the vertically aligned 1080p desktop that's below the main screen lowest part.

If you raise the secondary monitor so the bottom is inline with the main desktop, does that fix it?

Windows currently and historically hasn't been that great with multi monitor setups. They've apparently worked really heavily on it in Windows 11, so hopefully we'll see issues like this disappear.

It seems like the screen alignment is causing the issue. I raised the second monitor so the bottom of both screens are flush (even though that is not how they are in reality) and the black part has vanished. I will monitor it tomorrow but it sounds like this will have sorted it.

And yes, hopefully this is something that will be fixed in Windows 11. It's small things like this that make PC's frustrating to use sometimes, as now when I move the mouse from one monitor to the next it skips as it enters the screen. First world problems, I know...

Thanks for your help @SpyderTracks (y)

At least it was an easy fix hopefully.

Yeah, multi monitor support has been pretty shocking on PC forever, it's about time they put some real effort into sorting it.

With so many people now working on laptops connected to multi external displays, I think Microsoft have finally realised that it's more important than ever to get it working reliably.

On of the things they say they've worked on heavily is reconnecting screens after disconnecting them, it will remember your setup and put the layout the same as it was previously.

Just OT but while you're here...

I saw a post from yourself somewhere quite a while ago but I haven't been able to find it again, in it you were talking about recommended graphics settings for games? Was there a website or piece of software that offered recommended settings for your particular setup depending on which game you were wanting to play?

there are various sites if you search for the game an "optimised settings" that will bring up a load of results to help with individual games.

a particular site that repeatedly pops up and seems to go into real depth like including mouse sensitivities for FPS games is prosettings:

They seem to be really good.

There's a thread here with a couple of youtube videos more inclined to tell you what the most usual settings to adjust are that have the most impact, and what they actually do:
