Cyberpunk 2077

Kinda torn now. Woke up to an "in testing" email, so there's a good chance I'll be unboxing tomorrow or Friday and while those GN videos will allow me to have a good stab at optimising the game (seems like something along the lines of High graphics settings along with Medium and Ultra raytracing and Quality DLSS is a good baseline with a 3080 to target around 60FPS), the bugs, etc are making me think that I might be better throwing myself into maybe RDR2 or something for a couple of months and come back once 2077 has had more bug fixes and optimisation.
If you have any games you played on your previous / current PC, it’s brilliant loading them on to a new rig and playing them maxed out.

For CyberPunk, it could be an idea to wait, it does seem they released too early for a late release game lol

Yeah, that's the way I'm leaning at the moment - play around with a few older games to see the difference between the performance I'm used to and what I can soon experience, and then come back to CP maybe once the DLC starts to drop.

I think that’s exactly the right way to approach things. Maybe get a ray tracing enabled title like Control or Shadow of the Tomb Raider up and running and see how that’s looking. Red Dead 2 is another good shout. And then when Cyberpunk is patched and a bit more stable you’ll get the full experience 👍

Does Red Dead 2 have ray tracing? Thought it didn’t?

It does not have ray tracing, no. I was just using it as an example of a title that’ll push a system hard [emoji106]

That’s ok then. Spent a while looking yesterday at its options and couldn’t find it then when you mentioned it just after saying about RT I thought I’d best to have another look and still couldn’t find it. Lol.

Ah, sorry for any confusion there.

Imagine if I’d trolled you and said it definitely did have ray tracing. You could’ve been in that options menu for weeks!

My understanding is that as it was designed for use on hardware that has ray tracing capabilities (Nvidia's 2000 series and the updated versions of the last gen consoles (PS4 Pro & One X)), it looks as though it is ray traced in certain places, but it isn't. The lighting effects on RDR2 look incredible compared to RDR.

They really do! I was halfway through the game on a 2070 Super thinking it looked amazing. Then getting the 3070 installed and continuing really has taken it to the next level. The fog, the reflections off water, it’s just a beautiful game.

Saying that though... I feel that it’s starting to outstay it’s welcome now and I’m kind of just wanting to get it finished.

Anyway, I’m going to stop derailing this Cyberpunk thread with talk of cowboys. Let normal service resume 😶

Sony have removed CP2077 from the Playstation store...

That is just nuts!

Don’t blame them, if a software house releases a poorly optimised or effectively rubbish game for a platform, then don’t sell it.

their is a finite amount of time whereby gamers will put up with a rubbish game.

If a game has great game play and immersion without reliance on shiny n pretty things, then it has a chance.

if it needs those shiny pretty things though, then the majority will just not bother with it.

If CyberPunk falls in to the latter category, then I could even see Steam putting a warning up about Specs etc.

Sorry my bad asking the RDR2 question.

Changing back then, my CP question is, what’s the gameplay like / storyline (if any) like? Have they concentrated more on it looking great and it’s poor or is the concept of a good game actually there? What is the concept?

I like a game to play well storyline / campaign mode wise as well as to look good.

Apparently CDPR’s stocks fell 33% in the wake of all this!
I knew they'd fallen 30% since launch as of the day before yesterday. The impact of this will probably be felt today, and this could well be massive considering games such as Anthem, No Man's Sky and Fallout 76 didn't get this treatment.

I tend to play quite a few games at once (currently have 18 games on rotation) and put them to one side for a while once I burn out - I did the same with Assassin's Creed: Odyssey a year or so back, so will be looking forward to getting back into it in the near future. For anybody interested, this is what I'm currently playing through/planning to play through soon:

I derail threads often, so I'm kinda glad it wasn't me this time!!

A lot of reviewers seem to feel that the storyline is good, but a little short. Hopefully some storyline DLC will flesh it out second half of 2021.

This may change things with the CyberPunk saga.

there is part of me that says about time Software organisations were held to account over releasing unfinished software.

A few have track records at this, trying to meet marketing schedules with a product that will not be ready.

my concern, is not so much this but with the over working and treatment of Devs etc.

There is currently a large push by ransom ware gangs to get serious malware in to mainline games, even providers such as Steam (sockets recently hacked).

to an overworked Dev getting grief internally, someone offering £10 million to insert malicious code in to the next COD, Cyberpunk, or other expected top selling game.

especially when you consider clowns do work for their employer on laptops, PCs that they also play games on.

Anyhow, all is not rosey at CDPR, legal cases and upset Devs.

There's always been an element of overworking/crunch/whatever you want to call it in software development, but as gaming has gone more mainstream and investors with eyes purely on generating as much cash as possible have entered management level positions, crunch is happening on an industrial scale. As you say, the risks of overworked devs being enticed by ransomware gangs or whoever else is a concern.

I'd hate to see CDPR or even the parent company CDP go bust as a result of the legal cases and other fallout, but it may take a major company going under to see genuine change in the industry.

The link to Steam exploit.

yes agreed about overworking, I have had to do it for major releases and have had to ‘persuade’ Devs, QA etc to do it.

The problem being you can only use that whip so many times.

Does a whipped Dev give the same Quality output than one that is fed and allowed to sleep?

Admittedly, a lot stems from initial project review and having unrealistic timeframes submitted by Devs (or their management) simply to appease board members. 6 months Dev to marketing is 4 months as things can be pulled in, without realising that 2 months they cut was 2 months QA and Alpha testing.
