CPU temps seem a bit too high.

Hi guys,

Bought a new pc and it was delivered last week, with a bit of...transit "damage" to it (card reader - only half showing in the bay, GPU had to be resitted and top of case was slightly damaged) All 3 are fixed now but I'm somewhat worried about the temps of my CPU. My mobo is Asus Rampage IV extreme.

I have a stock i7 3820 and a Spire Gemini rev.3 cooler 600-1800 RPM IIRC.

When the fan is running at 600 (well, it was actually running at 580) my cpu temp was 45c I have just made the fans go at max (1700 RPM according to bios) which dropped the temp a few degrees.

Now with using Core Temp 1.0, I recorded the idle temps and full load temp using intel burntest.

Idle

Core #0 35c
Core #1 34c
Core #2 36c
Core #3 38c

Full Load

Core #0 74c
Core #1 70c
Core #2 78c
Core #3 82c

Could the fan need resitting due to transit? My room temp is about 18c mobo 28c case is about 22-25c GPU (GTX 680 4GB) is 30c idle @ 30% fan speed.

Cheers!

wht software did you use to get the full load mate?

the idle temps are fine though.

Intel BurnTest

I use photoshop, gaming, harsh video editing alot so I wanted to make sure that the cpu and the temps can handle it no problem. I also wanted to test it at full load to make sure everything is fine due to the somewhat poor transit DPD gave me.

The iddle temps look fine, have you overclocked the cpu?

My CPU cores occasionally get up to the high 70s if running at full load for an extended period of time (with the door to the computer room shut etc. - my cpu is over clocked however). If you are regularly getting above 80 degrees though it could be concerning.

If you have a look in the ASUS software (should have come with your mobo - you will find it in the system tray) turn your CPU fans onto the 'extreme' profile. It will make them crank up at a lower temp.

I have turned the fans on full via the bios, unless the software "extreme profile" makes them spin faster then what they are rated?

I installed everything on the asus disk and have no software that is linked to fan control. Actually, searching for "ASUS" brings up no results. That's weird.

But yes, at full load, the max seems to hit the low 80's, I bought the 2 years warranty so if anything -does- happen then it will be covered but I'd rather avoid waiting for that day.

EDIT : Found the AI Suite on the disk, says it's not installed, so installing it now.

If you've already set them to max via bios the ASUS program wont help you. It does not make the fans spin any faster than they are rated, it just has an easy to access option for changing their settings.

Strange that you cant find it though, it is the ASUS AI Suite and has fan control over the fans linked to the motherboard fan headers.

It's installed.

What is weird is that asus AI Suite is reporting that the cpu temp is 31c and cpu fan is only at 580 rpm (the absolute minimum) should I run Intel Burntest so the cpu is at full load and read the temps?

Have put the fans at full speed via the suite and watching the cpu temp.

Running it for 4 minutes

ASUS AI Suite = 28c

Core Temp 1.0 = 36c

Which is the more...reliable?

EDIT : Popping to the shop quickly, back in 10mins lol

I'd suggest Core Temp may be more accurate as I am not sure how the AI suite calculates the temperature. However they shouldn't be too far apart really - ie perhaps the "average" of all cores on coretemp vs ai suite should be similar.

It is strange that your CPU fan is not reporting the correct speed though.

I would agree with steaky, Core Temp is more reliable than the Asus AI Suite in my experience.

I think it reverted it back down to 580 RPM when I installed the software since AI Suite is basically the same as the bios for fan control

Just used IntelBurn Test and here is the results (Results are full load + FULL fan speed)

Asus Suite II

71c

Core Temp

Core #0 75c
Core #1 71c
Core #2 81c
Core #3 84c

Reading the "About" for the IntelBurn Test

A program that simplifies the usage of Intel(R) Linpack. Linpack by Intel(R) is an extremely stressful porgram that will put even the most powerful X86/x64 CPU in the world at its knees. Load temp under Linpack will be up to 22C higher then the competing software Prime95

This is obviously some misunderstanding from me, but I would have assumed anything that forces the CPU to work at 100% on all cores would be putting it through a similar degree of stress as any other program.

I'm not sure it is a problem though, unless you are likely to perform operations that require 100% CPU usage for a long time you shouldn't experience anything like those temps. I wish I could run the burn test on my rig now and see if I get similar temps to the last time I checked (during Folding) see if Intel Burn test is more stressful on a CPU.

Yeah, that's what I'm confused about also. If Prime95 forces the cores to work 100% and so does the IntelBurn Test then surely both should be the same temps? 100% is 100%, regardless.

I'm gonna run 3DMark Vantage and see the temps with that. Will edit this post with results.

A friend of mine said "Wouldn't it be funny if they put the fans on the wrong way round" haha.

That is after running one run of 3dMark Vantage?

Not trying to sound condescending etc. but did you reset the max temps on coretemp first?

I'm afraid I don't really know what else to suggest without delving into warranty voiding problems (googling the issue suggests others have had some success with undervolting, but I wouldn't recommend this without PCS guidance). Have you contacted PCS about this? If not it might be worth getting in touch with them see if they think it is a problem or not. I imagine they have more experience with this cooler / CPU configuration :)

Yeah I'll put in another support message regarding this. The DPD guy asked me to help him get it to my door (I think if I said no, or was unable to help, he'd of left it on the street lol) then when I asked him if he could help get it down my stairs (narrow stairs with a sharp turn at the top) he said "Nope sorry, not part of my job, I'm not allowed" and walked away. I really wanted to avoid sending it back because of this reason + Old PC needs it's cpu fan replaced due to worn bearings.

I could probably replace the cooler with PCS's guidance but a past experience kinda haunts me with computers. Back in the IDE cable days - I opened the case up, put in a new CD drive, didn't touch any wires or anything, wearing anti-static wristband and boom, mobo failure. lol.

Anyway, thanks for the help steaky! Will update thread with any news (may help someone else who is experiencing the same)
