"CPU Over Temperature Error" on bootup

Hey, I've had my pc for a couple of years now with no issues. I've gone to boot up today and my fans kick into overdrive and I get a "CPU Over Temperature Error".

Looking at it in the bios menu (which is all I can get to) my CPU is running at 95+ degrees even though it's only just been turned on and is nowhere near that temp.

Seems to me like it might be something to do with temperature sensors potentially ?

Any suggestions ?

Hi there,

If not, can you post up the specs?

Oh yeah of course:

Motherboard: ASUS® Z170-A: ATX, LG1151, USB 3.1, SATA 6GBs
RAM: 16GB KINGSTON HYPER-X FURY DDR4 2666MHz (2 x 8GB)
GPU: 6GB NVIDIA GEFORCE GTX 980 Ti - DVI, HDMI, 3 DP 1st

I'm wondering if maybe the pump in my cooler has died ? It's been 6 years or so and there was a bit of gurgling a few months back, but it went away after half hour or so.

Any suggestions of things to check would be super appreciated!

The pump is sounding like the possible culprit.

The way I would test it would be to disconnect the fans but leave the pump connected. When you switch the system on you should hear the pump humming. If you gently press a pen on the back of the pump head you should be able to feel it vibrate also.

Yeah all silent and no vibrations. I'll pick up a new CPU Cooler this weekend and install. I'm due a new build in the next few months anyway - system is starting to show its age!

Cheers for the help.
