Hi,

I am just wondering if I should optimse my M.2 SSD, e.g. using the TRIM command, which is similar to defrag for a conventional mechanical HDD?

Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated, please.

Thank you.

Hi,

I have checked the optimse settings for the MP600 M.2 SDD in Windows 10 Professional and the optimse drive settings, are set to "Weekly". But the drive was last optimsed 12 days ago.

Is this okay? Or would it be okay to occasionally optimse the drive manually in Windows 10?

Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated, please.

Thank you.

There aren’t any optimisation settings to make, not since back in windows 7 days.

when you say optimisation what do you mean?

there’s litrerally nothing you need to do on an ssd it’s all controlled automatically by the OS. Trim is working constantly without having to do anything.

I have attached 2 screenshots. One showing the "Optimise Drives" and other the "Drive Optimisation schedule".

That’s defrag. SSD’s don’t need defragging, that’s what TRIM is for. If you defrag an SSD you’ll massively reduce its lifespan.

Don’t fiddle, there’s nothing you need to do to an SSD.

Hi,

I have checked the optimise status of my m.2 SSD and it states “Needs optimisation (33 days since last run)”. No settings relating to drive optimisation have been changed.

Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated, please.

Thank you.

Optimisation is defragmenting, which you don't want to do on an SSD, so suggests that defragging has been manually run on that drive or at some point it was defrgragged by mistake.

Hi @SpyderTracks I think Windows 10 issues the 'Trim' command to the SSD, because the optimisation status changes to OK and doesn't normally mention "needs optimisation".

The SSD hasn't been manually optimised, so it must be Windows 10.

Not sure if this is relevant but there is a bug in Windows 10 version 2004.

Thank you for your advice. 👍
