Computer completely Crashes and has to be rebooted with the power switch

While gaming ands using my pc it will often happen where my monitor screen will go black and become completely unresponsive to anything that i do, using the power button on top to force a restart of the computer does not work the only way i can restart it is by using the power switch at the back. Any help or ideas on why this is happening would be appreciated.
