Coming from Laptop - New to Gaming PCs: Loosing my mind!

Okay, so to start with a bit of a preface; i am completely, and i mean completely new to all of this and i hope i've posted in the correct place. When i read all of this technical jargon i feel like it's another language i'm not understanding and over the last few hours of reading guides, feeling my blood pressure rise to immeasurable levels i feel i'm still no better than when i had started. You may ask "Then why come here? Buy a pre-made and save yourself the hassle!" However, having bought a custom laptop from PCs five years or so ago, which has served me immensely well with little to no issue compared to my experiences in the past buying from companys that shall remain unamed; i would like to continue my custom here. The problem is as i stated, with more living space now i am looking to make the transition from a laptop to a desktop PC, and my god, it's a whole new world of confusion, i feel like a five year old being asked to learn another language and study for a masters at the same time when it comes to making sure things sync up and work together.

The 'build' (if you can call it that) that i am posting here is the very barebones makings of my endevours, and it doesn't add up to much. Many of the options i have selected are based on a mish-mash of other peoples forum posts, the how-to guide and, frankly... i need some help.

Requirements/needs:
Price:- £1700-2200ish not set in stone.
1440p gaming.
useage: Mid-High end gaming (no 4k no VR no flightsim/some photoshop work. so maybe it's not high end to what others may consider high-end)
Typically play RTS (so lot's of caclulations going on), Open world (Fallout/Gta) stuff on high settings.
Suggestion for a monitor that will be compatible with my needs
Suggestion for a case that is compatible with my needs (a lot of the ones suggested in the guide i can't even find!)

I will post my barebones 'build' here, it is completely in the early stages and purely as a means of having something to put down in this post, alongside my thoughts and some side-notes. It's honestly embarassing, but i assure you i've tried my best at this, and i have difficulty processing all of this. Looking for something somewhat future proof (i've survived perfectly happy with a high-end (well it was back then) laptop for 5 years, no upgrades obviously but i would like something beefy enough to ensure i can play things in the future with no hassle - i won't be looking to upgrade the graphics card ridiculously often, Please go easy on me! (think PC building for dummies, i'll probably require the home instillation) and i'm eternally grateful for any help or advice given. I am also aware that with the things i have currently selected, it may well go over budget when the case/monitor is taken into account.

Welcome to the confusing world! Honestly, it looks like a really solid system with few areas we could optimise a little bit.

That said, the build guide is now a little out of date with the release of Intel 12th gen which has now taken the performance crown and is our general recommendation. We'd be happy to get you sorted out with a system in a second but a question first, when it comes to monitors, is the monitor you're after included in your 1700-2200 budget? Or is it something you'll be buying seperately to the budget? A monitor for this tier of build will come in at abouttt £300-350

Hey!
I would say the determining factor would be how much it would hinder performance having to make downgrades in order to accompany the monitor within budget. If the answer is 'not drastically' (i'd be curious to know specifics, ie. fps drops in comparison etc.) then i'd say within, but if we're talking a noticeable difference, i could probably make due with considering it outside of the budget, hope that helps?
I have no experience in how the cards compete against one another, as i've only really had the portable versions, and they weren't as many options available, i will take a look in the mean time.

edit: i checked it with the 2060, 3050 and others and let's say it's outside the budget, what would people suggest?.

I'm going to suggest an "ideal 1440p" gaming setup, and then you can tell me how much we need to bring the budget down by!

We should start with the display. There are a few good options now for non-horrendous prices. They would be the Dell S2721DGFA (£309), the ASUS VG27AQ (listed as out of stock today, but normally around £300-310), and the MSI MAG274QRF-QD (the 1440p king for £399).

Here's the ideal build I'd suggest to go with them:

Case
CORSAIR iCUE 5000X RGB MID TOWER GAMING CASE Perfect case - the Fractal Meshify 2 if you want something less blingy
Processor (CPU)

Intel® Core™ i7 12-Core Processor i7-12700K (3.6GHz) 25MB Cache The ideal gaming CPU -- the 12900K adds very little
Motherboard

ASUS® TUF GAMING Z690-PLUS WIFI D4 (LGA1700, USB 3.2, PCIe 5.0) - ARGB Ready Excellent motherboard with integrated WiFi
Memory (RAM)

16GB Corsair VENGEANCE DDR4 3200MHz (2 x 8GB) The 3600MHz memory adds very little
Graphics Card

1TB INTEL® 670p M.2 NVMe PCIe SSD (up to 3500MB/sR | 2500MB/sW) Only-slightly-less-fast games drive
Power Supply

CORSAIR 850W RMx SERIES™ MODULAR 80 PLUS® GOLD, ULTRA QUIET Ideal power supply -- maybe worth bumping to 1000W
Power Cable

1 x 1 Metre UK Power Cable (Kettle Lead)
Processor Cooling
Corsair iCUE H150i RGB PRO XT Hydro Series High Performance CPU Cooler Excellent cooler - could go for the H115i to reduce the cost a little

Just wanted to say a quick thank you.
I've had a brief read over, unfortunately i've got a very busy Saturday so i can't do much at the moment with it, but tomorrow i'll be taking a more in depth look at everything and taking the plunge (this old laptop is on it's way out, but it's served me well!) - but from first glance it looks fantastic, and i appreciate the comments in regards to each individual part explaining it to me! I do have a quick question however - when i do order a build, how difficult is it going to be setting the entire thing up? Is it possible for someone like myself to royally screw it up? Does the fact i'm even asking this suggest i should have someone install it for me, or is it going to be a simple YT video and follow instructions kind of thing.

Edit: found a bit of time.
I'm sold on the 3060ti for a start! gorgeous graphics card.
May i ask why the suggestion on the Intel® Core™ i7 12-Core Processor i7-12700K (3.6GHz) 25MB Cache over the one in my initial AMD one in my initial post that i got from the guide, is it a price thing - or does this perform better? The same question applies to the Motherboard i suppose. Again, many thanks for taking the time out of your day to answer these questions and help out, it's much appreciated.

It comes fully set up, you just open it first time and set your account but windows and everything is fully set up for you.

The guide that you quoted is now a little outdated. The 5900X is a great chip, don't get me wrong, but the Intel 12700K/12900K are a little bit ahead. For now! And the overall cost is virtually the same (if you go for DDR4) so there's really no reason not to. The 12900K adds virtually nothing in gaming, so there's no reason to choose it over the 12700K.

The motherboard is a kind of mid-tier one: good, but not overly expensive.

The setup isn't difficult. The first thing is to open the case and remove the padding that PCS will put in to prevent your graphics card breaking out of the socket in transport. (This is easy.) The second is to attach the WiFi antennae. (This is also easy.) The third is to turn it on and let Windows configure itself. (This is also easy.) Lastly, you open up your favourite game and pwn some n00bs. (This is the hardest bit.)

Hi there,
I'm going to order within next few days, but it seems the cooler 'Corsair iCUE H150i RGB PRO XT Hydro Series High Performance CPU Cooler' Is currently out of stock, would one of the H115is be sufficient (they aren't 290w) even if i go with a better power supply 1000w as opposed to 850. I'm also okay with waiting, i don't know what the re-stock times are like. Thank you for the continued help to everyone.

Its about £20 more but i would go for the H150i Elite Capellix, it think the H150i RGB Pro is an older model anyway

The H115i options will both be fine for you. The difference from the H150i is actually fairly small. I wouldn't pay much attention to the watt rating; they're both completely adequate for any mainstream CPU unless you're doing stupid overclocking.

Hello friends, i'm back! - I've been fortunate enough to increase the budget somewhat and made a few changes for what i think a good 1440p set up will be, i'd appreciate if you can check this and ensure the case is sufficient and the cooling. As well as no bottlenecks. Windows 10 still preferable to 11? I'm about to hit order and want to just doubly check it's all good.

Looks an awesome build to me. A few things seem extravagant without having a huge effect on performance (the 520 SSD rather than say a 670p – you could also go for a 530 boot drive instead; the DDR5 memory; the 3070 Ti when a 3060 Ti would probably be enough) and I'd definitely go for the 12700K.

But all of this is quite minor and you could argue most of it either way...

What's life without a little extravagancy now and again when you're able
You don't see any bottleneck issues/ cooling issues (12900k runs hot right?) etc. compatability within the build or that monitor? I'll take a look at your suggestions and see how it knocks the price down, but assuming i go with that. I'm good to go?
appreciate the feedback from you and everyone throughout the journey :p

No, everything should be perfectly compatible. The H115i is a great cooler and the Meshify 2 is one of the best cases there is; you'll be just fine.

Agree with all of the above stated by @sck451 This is probably what you'd be looking at if you were to take the advice on board

Case
FRACTAL MESHIFY 2 LIGHT TEMPERED GLASS
Processor (CPU)
Intel® Core™ i7 12-Core Processor i7-12700K (3.6GHz) 25MB Cache 100% agree with this, the 12900K adds a tonne of heat for really not much performance, 12700K is still a monster CPU
Motherboard
ASUS® TUF GAMING Z690-PLUS WIFI D4 (LGA1700, USB 3.2, PCIe 5.0) - ARGB Ready Plenty of Mobo for the CPU
Memory (RAM)
32GB Corsair VENGEANCE DDR4 3600MHz (2 x 16GB) Super fast DDR4 RAM, gone for the Non-RGB flavour, feel free to add it if you'd prefer
Graphics Card
8GB NVIDIA GEFORCE RTX 3070 Ti - HDMI, DP, LHR
1st M.2 SSD Drive
500GB SEAGATE FIRECUDA 530 GEN 4 PCIe NVMe (up to 7000MB/R, 3000MB/W)
1st M.2 SSD Drive
1TB INTEL® 670p M.2 NVMe PCIe SSD (up to 3500MB/sR | 2500MB/sW) More sensible storage drive
1st Storage Drive
1TB SEAGATE BARRACUDA SATA-III 3.5" HDD, 6GB/s, 7200RPM, 64MB CACHE
Power Supply
CORSAIR 1000W RMx SERIES™ MODULAR 80 PLUS GOLD, ULTRA QUIET
Power Cable
1 x 1.5 Metre UK Power Cable (Kettle Lead)
Braided Power Supply Cables
CORSAIR Premium Individually Sleeved PSU Cable Kit Pro - Black I've added these, they'll really help the build look 110%
Processor Cooling
Corsair H150i ELITE CAPELLIX RGB Hydro Series High Performance CPU Cooler If you scroll down there's a H150i PRO XT and Capellix that aren't PCS branded that are in stock, so added one of those
