Checking Hive Mind on this New Build

Ordered and currently been in pre-production for a few weeks.
The delay has got me wondering if there was a better combo available for a machine that will mainly be used for video but some audio & photo editing too (mainly adobe apps).

The Xeon range is a very particular kettle of fish and as such only tends to suit a very particular subsection of uses. We’re in the realms of high end workstation and/or running servers. They’re also knocking on a bit, age wise so are being outperformed on many levels.

You say you’re looking at mainly video work, can we pull at that thread a little more? What exactly are you going to be doing?

I personally haven’t seen a Xeon system in ages so am not the best informed in that respect. But depending on your uses, an AMD or iCore system is potentially much more likely to be a suitable build.

I agree fully that the Xeon is unlikely to be the best choice here. That particular chip is old and not especially strong. A 24-core Threadripper would knock it out of the park in every respect; probably a 5950X would do so as well (unless you have big PCIe requirements). I have to say I can't even work out which configurator you've used, so I can't even estimate your budget (perhaps you made this configuration a little while ago?), but I'm certain you'll be able to do much better than this.

As well as @AgentCooper's questions, could you let us know what your budget might be?

Thank you both for taking the time to review this.

I attempted to use the sites builder a while back to create a desktop that can handle 4k footage plus vfx from after effects. Options seemed limited at the time, not sure if that was pandemic related.

Looking to future proof to a degree in that the vfx will no doubt become more intensive as time goes on and eventually include animation too.

Currently only using for music videos & docs but budgets are increasing and current setup is becoming too much of a bottleneck for time. Budget wise, £3500-4500 for the right machine.

Thanks again

Awesome! Thanks so much.

I'm using adobe software for the most part. Does the Intel/Nvidia combo have as much of a performance boost over AMD as the marketing would like to make out?

I'd probably go for 2x16GB RAM to allow for an upgrade, but otherwise, agree in every detail.

10th and 11th generation Intel CPUs are way behind AMD. 12th generation are currently slightly ahead, but are power hungry and there have been some issues with Windows bugs. AMD are due to release refreshed CPUs early 2022. There were some early reports of 12th generation Intel bashing AMD in W11, but his was due to a Windows bug that has since been fixed.
