Check This Spec! - Curious Rookie

Hi all,

I ordered a custom PC about 5 years ago and now that windows 10 is going to expire next year I'm using this as an excuse to get a new nicely spec'd PC.

I've listed the spec below but before that I want to raise a few questions in general as well as what I'm looking for.

1. I have very little knowledge of how to maintain hardware/software, and as I'm looking for this next spec to last 5+ years should I just buy off the shelf? I've looked, but the machines seem to be almost twice as expensive for the spec you can build custom on a site like this.

2. Even if I do buy off the shelf I'm assuming it will need maintenance to a certain degree anyway?

What I'm looking for/things to consider:

- Power efficient (may be on all day and I don't want sky-high energy bills/wasting electricity) - although this may be a software based question?
- Very quiet
- Output to 2 monitors
- Good Bluetooth (for mouse and keyboard)
- WIFI (built in with strong range)
- To be well cooled (can handle heavy workloads throughout a hot summers day)
- I'm pretty square so I don't need it lit up like a Christmas tree

Monitor - 2 x ASUS VA229HR - Resolution - FHD 1080p, Refresh rate - 75Hz
Uses - Primarily need a workhorse for online/browser windows - lots of difference tabs. Secondary - gaming (just need it to be capable, not looking for high end)
Max Budget - 1.2k

Note: the below build was based on https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/view/Blaze-Elite/ I just upgraded a few parts:

Hello, we need more information in order to provide the best recommendations for your needs.
Could you please look through this thread and provide any relevant information?

Regarding your questions:

1- An off-the-shelf/prebuilt product is generally not recommended because it's not designed to your requirements; also, the components are frequently unbalanced (i.e. high-end GPU mixed with others relatively low-end to reduce costs) and/or of poor quality.

2- Any system requires a minimal degree of maintenance, which is often limited to regular cleaning/removing dust and replacing thermal paste after a certain period of usage.

Thanks, post updated.
For reference, an entry-level 1080p gaming system costs roughly £1500.

With your limited budget, I may suggest something that is at least slightly upgradeable in the future.
It would be far than optimal but I'm not able to pick up higher specs without going overbudget.

I would recommend saving up a bit more. Prices are going up in line with everything nowadays, a £1000 PC 5 year ago would lay waste to a £1500 PC today.... it's just the way of things unfortunately.

What is the spec of your current PC? Is it below the requirements for Windows 11? We would always recommend spending wisely so that the PC lasts at least 10 years with only periodic upgrade of the GPU and, less frequently, the CPU.

£1500 spent now would open this door. £1200 just now unfortunately doesn't really cover the bases.

Genuinely, £1500 is night and day and you should expect up to 10 years out of a build of that budget. Your previous build seems a lot older than 5 years, if purchased 5 years ago it was done in a similar fashion to your original choices... by opting for an older platform. The reason for opting for the latest available platform is that it gives you the space to upgrade down the line and not need to pay for a new system.

I can't select the 7800X3D but this is the CPU I would suggest you go for. Just wait for it coming into stock and then order. The GPU is fairly entry for 1080p but with your monitor it will have you covered. If you're thinking of upgrading to 1440p down the line then you'll want to look at the 7700XT as a minimum, with the 7800XT being more in line. The 7700XT is a good level for high refresh 1080p or lower end 1440p. For a little more than £1500 you can get the 7700XT in there.

Please note that this includes transferring your current Windows license from your old PC.

Hi Scott,

I've looked at another setup which includes the 7800X3D - does this look OK? I think I need to find a decent case with good airflow as my concern is cooling. Would the below air cooler be enough here? I just don't feel quite comfortable having a liquid cooler for 5-10 years in the PC.

Thanks

hi Scott,

Just revisiting this and seeing if I can lower the cost - would getting a 5700X3D bottleneck a 4070 Super?

Thanks
It all depends on the budget, if the budget has changed you need to let us know what it is. This is why we ask for the maximum budget at the outset to avoid all this back and forth.

A 5700x3d would never be recommended as it’s 3 generations old now and you can’t upgrade to a newer generation as it’s a different socket, so it’s already half way through its lifespan and would be a bottleneck for any GPU.

If your budget hasn’t changed, not sure how we can say this any clearer, it’s not high enough for a 4070 Super, it's at the very entry level for a 1080p GPU
