Hi all,
Would appreciate help on this - I'm a relative novice having done a lot of PC gaming in my youth (12+ years ago) and dabbled very lightly in basic PC upgrades back then. I've not done PC gaming for quite some time and I'm looking at getting a set-up.
This is predominantly driven by a want to get back on WoW (that Hardcore content is tickling an itch I didn't know I had) but I also used to be big on League of Legends and do enjoy other games such as Civilisation and Football Manager. I also play the likes of RS Siege and Apex Legends so wouldn't mind the opportunity to switch off console - and of course, i'm open to new games and potential AAA's in the future.
I used to game on a fairly basic, budget set up from a major retailer and then later, on a bog standard i5 laptop (not optimised for gaming) - my point is that my bar is likely quite low for what good looks like and I'm quite used to scaling back settings/graphics to improve smoothness.
I don't have a huge budget - I'm effectively trying to build a mid-range sort of set-up on a budget and have done a fair amount of reading on where I can get 'bang for buck'. I also wouldn't mind some future proofing/ability to upgrade in the future - the below is what i've sort of settled on.
This is based on the following information that I've read
- The CPU and GPU are what's going to make the real difference so the majority of the spend should go there.
- Other components still shouldn't be neglected though (i have tried to balance)
Please don't roast me if it's wrong, it's just the general consensus I seem to have found on the internet - i am posting here as I'm very open to some feedback and learning.
The questions I have are as follows:
- I can't seem to find a general consensus on motherboards, I've read a lot of people saying "it doesn't matter" and others saying "it does for future proofing etc." Is the one I have selected the right choice?
- Processor cooling, a lot of people say this isn't necessary and stock is fine - thoughts?
- Power supply; is 550W enough or should I be looking at 650W
Any other general advice or faux pas i've made on the set-up would be good to hear about. Looking for a little feedback before purchasing. I should also say that this is already a little more than I want to spend (I know, I know, I want the world for nothing) so if there is upgrades to be made, I'd also like to hear about trade-offs I can make or areas I've potentially overspecced or can easily upgrade later?
