Best mouse for productivity and work?

Evening all, not too sure if this is the most appropriate place to post - feel free to move it not.

I'm an IT manager by day, web designer by evening, and looking to get into a bit of gaming too once the new build arrives in a few days time (5950x, Strix 3090 etc)

I was about to order a Logitech MX Master 3, to replace my Performance MX which is showing signs of age. I've read a few posts which suggest the MX Master 3 is fine for productivity, but not for gaming. My question is, is there a single mouse that does it all? I expect I'm not the only one who spends most of the day and evening chained to a desk these days, what kit do you use?

I'm considering a wireless G502 Lightspeed, but would the high dpi make this too sensitive for work use, or would be not be quite as ergonomic?

Thoughts / ideas welcome!

Cheers

I guess the first thing is what kind of features are you looking for in the productivity area that would differ from gaming?

Generally gaming mice are the cream of the crop for any kind of performance excluding CAD and design work where you can get very specialist custom mice.

IMHO, any decent gaming mouse would cover both uses unless you have a specific requirement like a requirement for macro buttons etc.

I've recently picked up a Razer Death Adder V2, first Razer mouse I've had, it's purely for my gaming laptop for carrying around the place and I use it on my work laptop also. It wasn't expensive, but I'm absolutely blown away at how good it is generally, worth a lot more than it cost. On any gaming mouse, you can adjust the DPI currently in use, on a lot of them you have a button on the mouse to adjust DPI on the fly. You'll find the higher resolution monitor you're working with, you may appreciate a higher DPI also.

I generally run my gaming mouse at around 12000 DPI for work uses and toward 18000 for certain gaming scenarios, dropping down to around 12000 for aiming and suchlike.

The logitechs are decent also. Very good mice.

There are so many good models these days, all depends on your business / gaming requirements, what kinds of games, if they're MMO's they'll require a different type of mouse.

That's helpful insight, thanks.

In terms of games, Forza, Dirt, Call of Duty, I guess? I need to learn to use a keyboard and mouse rather than the xbox controller, otherwise I'll get looked down upon! :D

The G502 is a great mouse, most of the logitech ones are very good.

You'll find once your used to a mouse (it will take a little getting used to) you'll wonder how you ever managed to use a controller, it's SOOOO much faster and more accurate with a mouse!

You probably don't require a lot of macro buttons then.

The Death Adder V2 has the standard buttons plus center mouse wheel click, plus a dedicated DPI switch, plus it has the two buttons on thumb rest, so it's classed as a 5 button mouse.

For me that suits my basic gaming requirements where i pretty much just use the standard buttons, and for work where I use the thumb buttons to navigate web pages (forward and back). I find that really helpful.

I would say a 5 button mouse would be worthwhile for you as a starter, there really are so many good models out there, it's a very personal thing so having a range of good options to look through and find what leaps out for you.

One thing I'll add is that the latest gen wireless mice are just as good as wired these days, it's literally 0.1ms response time either way, they've made huge headway with it over the last couple of years and now it's just not a compromise any more (aside from wireless obviously being more expensive).

I've found Hardware Canucks are some of the best mice reviewers, they review loads and not the usual heavy hitters either, so you get a really good all round look at it:

That’s spot on, thank you!

I’ll definitely go wireless, you’re absolutely right that the technology these days means there is no discernible difference.

I’ll order this and return if I don’t get on:

Logitech G502 LIGHTSPEED Wireless Gaming Mouse, HERO 25K Sensor, 25,600 DPI, RGB, Adjustable Weights, 11 Programmable Buttons, Long Battery Life, POWERPLAY-compatible, PC/Mac - Black https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07QKC4WWD/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_ZKZWHTH008MMJC6JZG1X

Very good choice, it's a superb mouse, don't think there's any reviewer who's said otherwise:
