Hey all,

So this system was struggling to run stable from day 1.

USB ports would fail to work properly as soon as more than 3 devices were connected, new cables didn't solve that (tested them all on different system and had no issues). External drives randomly disconnecting and mouse lag to the point where you can't even move it at all.

System BSOD'ed working on Lightroom and Photoshop also couple times on idle state. Some programs wouldn't simply start at all.
New bios and drivers, fresh windows install didn't do anything.
Intel's baseline settings on bios didn't make it more stable either.

Anyone has any advice or similar experiences on similar setups?

So there's been a lot of upset gathering steam on the inter webs with intermittent games crashes on Intel 13th and 14th gen. Workarounds range from underclocking to disabling ecores. BUT, there are a lot of people finding that simply disabling hyperthreading is a proper solution. The findings...

The Intel 14900 and 13900 class chips are simply defective. There are some mitigations you can make on the motherboard which are worth trying first.

If it's still not functioning correctly after applying Intel Baselines Limits, then you'd need to do an RMA to have the CPU replaced most likely.

I must have got mixed up with another build, but I'm sure we'd said that for Adobe Creative Suite (and according to PugetSystems benchmarks), the 14900K was consistently <2% faster than the 14700K (as they have the same number of P-cores) and the extra performance was simply from the higher boost/turbo clocks, and it could only hit those higher speeds if properly cooled.

If not, it could perform worse if it starts throttling due to heat, so wasn't worth the premium.

The 14900KS was an even worse value proposition.

Unfortunately none of us would have specced the build the way you did, I'm not surprised you are finding stability issues as they were well noted before your purchase and have been compounded by fairly frequent updates on the state of Intel. Any plus points of Intel in metrics & on the Puget benchmarks are negated over long periods of use as Intel's party trick is always burst speed and limited time testing.

I would send back for an RMA and reduce the CPU to the 14700k. I would also consider dropping the RAM to 96GB maximum (using 2 slots, rather than 4.

Using over 64GB sets off alarm bells for me as to your methods. In photoshop and lightroom it doesn't make any sense. Full blown rendering rigs can make good use of high quantities of RAM but you're into workstation territory for that.

The advice given previously fell on deaf ears so I'm not sure if advice here is going to be any different. If we're not telling you what you're looking to hear it's probably best to just deal with PCS directly on the issue.

regarding going ahead with i9 14900ks i guess it was my mistake and dumb believe that premium will just be better at the end. I can't remember anyone recommending 14700k, was just advised to go with 14900k instead but reading now don't think it would make any difference as they are reported unstable as well.

Would processor issue explain USB problems too? Just wondering if there's more to that - motherboard, pcu?

Regarding RAM i would really like to keep 192GB as workload sometimes requires more than 96GB or at least I believe so.

It may not have been said in so many words on your build thread, but I know we've said it on many similar builds.

But whilst it's not specifically stated that the 14700K is more suitable, I notice SpyderTracks cautioning about the 14900KS (and the 14900K in general) due to heat on the penultimate post of this thread...

Thanks for the input mate but you must be having different build in mind, i didn't receive any other advice than going from 14900ks to 14900 and to change pcu, which i did.

Absolutely here not for argument, just advice on next steps, already contacted PCS but wanted to avoid any RMAs because it's pain to send it back from Ireland and wait again for replacement. Sadly it looks like there's no other way.

BTW I didn't notice any overheating problems or throttle, system just not stable and crashing or BOSD ing randomly.

Also this was never answered - USB issues ( external HDD random disconnect and really bad mouse lag) CPU related too or it's another issue?

Impossible to say with a non functioning cpu

but the IO die is part of the cpu as of 12th gen, so likely cpu related

An RMA is really the only way to try and remedy the situation. I know it's a pain but I can't think of any simple way out of it.

The CPU is going to cause issues with heavy use, whether that's the direct cause here is unknown.... it's just a high probability to have something to do with it.
The CPU can also bring about strange behaviours throughout the system. Unlikely to cause disconnects though, so this could suggest a motherboard/chipset issue.
I would be absolutely amazed if you were anywhere near 64GB, never mind 96+. I'm unsure how you are measuring this though or how you would come about this value. RAM being allocated is not RAM being used. The more RAM you have, the more will be allocated as Windows will try to use all available, minus a small percentage. This can lead people to believe their RAM is being used, it almost always isn't. With image manipulation you're very unlikely to be anywhere near what you think.

If the PC does indeed go back for an RMA, I would recommend dropping to the 14700k and 96GB of RAM. It covers all the bases and offers far more stability and long term use.

The other advice I was referring to was AM5 over Intel. The suggestions were trying to help and trying to explain that big numbers doesn't mean better. We don't get anything for trying to help, it's done purely to help your wallet and experience. We have no affiliations to PCS, or anyone else for that matter, so there's always an honesty in the advice given. We spend many countess hours going through the most recent tech and news on the products available across the globe, we spend countess hours trying to re-calibrate customers from making the same mistakes that we see day in day out, sometimes they listen.... sometimes they don't. We don't get anything either way so it's no real loss. It's just frustrating when advice is sought and ignored for no logical reasons, got to credit the advertising and shill sales I guess.
