Hello everyone,

I am new to the PC building world and to be honest I have no idea what build would be best to fit my requirements. Any help would be much appreciated, so lets begin.

Budget: £2500 Total (I can stretch an extra 10% on total price if really necessary as I need peripherals)
Monitor: I currently have no monitor
Uses: Multiple purposes, Work (construction industry, planning, having to option to design builds myself in the future). Gaming (having the option for VR and streaming, streaming necessities i.e Mic, camera ect not required at this time). Monitoring stocks and shares. Web and App designing (future purpose).

At this moment in time all I have is a chair :ROFLMAO:. Any recommendations in regards to a desk would be brilliant. Ideally I would like two monitors however a second monitor can be purchased at a later date (24" should be large enough?). ARGB isn't to important but if the prices only vary a little then why not. The case would need to be large enough for potential upgrades.

What an interesting build! I'm not an expert when it comes to building PC's for some of your applications but thought I'd give it a shot! For your work requirements and the future Web and App Designing needs, these all seem quite CPU and RAM dependent processes and then gaming is obviously quite GPU intensive. And for this build I feel I've struck a pretty good middle ground.

-For the CPU I've picked a Ryzen 7 5800X an 8 core CPU which should be enough to handle the work tasks although you would benefit from an upgrade to a Ryzen 9 if you're happy to extend the budget.
-I've gone for the X570 as it's a good match for the R7.
-Design work is generally pretty RAM intensive so I've gone for 32GB of 3200 RAM as Ryzen love fast RAM
-For gaming and the future potential of VR I feel a 3070 should do the job well enough. You'd benifit from a 3080 here but the wait for one is currently many months and the card realisitcally takes you outside the budget
-For storage I've given you a super fast 250GB M.2 SSD for Windows OS, , a 1TB M.2 SSD for your games and programs and a 2TB HDD for general file storage a 2TB HDD
-To power this build I've given you an RMx 850w as this will power the system comfortably and leave some room for upgrades down the line.
-The Ryzen 7 requires an uprated CPU cooler so I've gone for the Cooler Master Master Liquid 240 AIO which should do a perfect job
-I've added 2 extra fans for the front to make sure there's ample air intake to cool this powerful system
-If you use WiFi the wifi card is a must over the standard as it'll not only give you faster bandwith but also Bluetooth
-I've removed the antivirus as it's known to cause issues
-And added he Silver warranty as it's well worth the £5

The total of this build is £2,113. I have then added the Corsair gaming bundle for £97 which will give you a decent set of peripherals for you to use with your PC. These could be upgraded over time but I feel this set is a good deal to get you started. That takes our price to £2,210 for a monitor and peripherals.

Monitor wise, I feel a 1440p 144hz monitor will be a great experience on the 3070, you could get away with a 3060TI but I feel that VR will definitely benefit from a 3070. So for this I'd suggest either a Samsung G5 or an AOC CQ27G2U/BK for a curved monitor (which gives a more immersive game experience) or the Q27G2U/BK for a non-curved monitor. All three of these can be found at about £300 quite easily. That takes us to £2,510. I wasn't able to get a 2nd one in but I'm sure an inexpensive one can be found for £80 online or even less used when needed!

For the desk I feel IKEA is the gold standard in inexpensive good quality furniture. I found a MICKE which is a 142cm x 50 cm desk for £70 here. That takes our total to £2,580 for PC, monitor, accessories and desk!

With so many variables I'm sure this could be done very differently but this is a spec I feel pretty confident in and should do you well. Upgrades to Ryzen 9 for your work and web-design needs would defintely be utilised and a 3080 would improve the VR experience, but unless you're spending 2.5K on the PC alone, I feel you'll struggle to get these in a build. So as I said at the beginning, I feel like this should be quite a strong all rounder!

Worth noting for the future that most of the TUF/Strix motherboards have VRMs easily capable of running the 5800X (and even a 5950X).

You're not making use of the 2 4x4 PCIe lanes with your storage config so the storage config is pretty poorly optimized as both SSDs aren't Gen 4. It would be way better to drop the TUF-X570 down to a Strix B550-F and change the boot drive from a 970 to a 980, the price drops and you get significantly faster storage.

Another change I realised I could've made is faster speed RAM as the design work will benefit from it a lot.

almost no one is currently running 2 gen4 ssd’s as they are expensive. In a few years or so, they won’t be and most people will add a second gen4 drive. It’s all about futureproofing.

This is where the X570 is completely worth its money and a Strix isn’t necessary for cooling a 5800X.

I agree about the 980 though

Thank you for the help! That’s where I struggling when building a PC, getting the right balance. So what build would you recommend if I got a better processor? Lets throw the extra 10% on the build itself, so £2750 for the build. I know waiting times are long due to high demand, so that’ll give me time to sort monitors ect.

So I recently got a prebuilt same day dispatch Tornado to avoid the wait, which is very long at the moment.
I'm not suggesting you do the same, but I am very very happy. This will give you an indication of the specs and as you can see its quite similar to what was recommended above:

People seem to dislike the Frostflow 240, its been great for me so far.
I'd venture a suggestion of getting an ultrawide monitor for your workflow case. I have a 34' Alienware but the MAG 341CQ could fit the bill if you get with your PC. Its a really super experience. Gaming is amazing and the 3070 eats up 1440p, but for productivity it's a slam dunk for me. Its not for everyone but you can comfortably have 2 decent size workflows side by side. I have supplemented this further with a cheap Samsung and honestly coming from doing most of my work on a 13" MBP I'm in heaven.

It’s not that the prebuilts are bad, it is that some of the components, are not as great as the could be.

From your specs, the Storage is not fantastic.
The PSU could be better, but it’s not terrible by any means.
The cooler is cheap, however it will likely do it’s job.
The case isn’t great though.

But things like your cpu, gpu, motherboard, ram etc... near enough what we would spec in a custom build.

Personally, i’d love to see PCS add even more selection on parts, but that is because i would ideally want full control of parts and just not want to build it (not me specifically).

Agreed. However 750W is more than enough for me. The case is actually quite nice to work inside but the front is awful. Storage is fine for now, I think the PCS SSD is looking to be a reasonable device. Dont get me wrong, I wish I could have specced my own, particularly the case, but I just didnt have the patience to wait and made an informed decision to go for it.

Well actually it has go faster stripes !!! its fits into my nook rather nicely and is extremely sturdy it does look flimsey from the picture and I agree looks like a folding card table but its beautiful and I love it so avert your eyes nurse for you are not worthy ! Also got it black friday sale ;) and has cable management holes ;)

I did actually sit on it before I put my tower on it its made of steel so its all good :) a friend in work had one and I was as dubious as you chaps are until I viewed it myself no 55inch tv wouldent even fit in my nook and if I move out of my nook with anything pc gaming related I get a sudden case of ear ache and I have to sleep on the couch :(

People seem to dislike the Frostflow 240, its been great for me so far.
I'd venture a suggestion of getting an ultrawide monitor for your workflow case. I have a 34' Alienware but the MAG 341CQ could fit the bill if you get with your PC. Its a really super experience. Gaming is amazing and the 3070 eats up 1440p, but for productivity it's a slam dunk for me. Its not for everyone but you can comfortably have 2 decent size workflows side by side. I have supplemented this further with a cheap Samsung and honestly coming from doing most of my work on a 13" MBP I'm in heaven.

I have been looking at pre builds however I’m in no rush. If it’s worth the wait to get better value for money then I may as well.

Desk? Anything from IKEA 😂 Most of my furniture is from there and it's done me well so far! I linked this desk earlier which seems like a pretty good deal. Also @jamiephillips909 recommeneded one further up.

For Monitors, a 1440p 144hz monitor is a great gaming experience these days and will pair well with a 3070. If you'd like a curved monitor then the Samsung G5 or an AOC CQ27G2U/BK come highly on my recommendations. If you'd rather a flat panel then the AOC Q27G2U/BK would likely be a good shout. All three of these can be found for under £300 quite easily online

(Very) Loosely speaking:
3080 - 4K
3070 - 1440p/1440p Ultrawide
3060 - 1080p/1440p

Generally the "norm" for a modern gaming system would be 1440p resolutions atm
