thanks.. one question, if I go with the ASUS® Z97-A and the GTX 760, can I run up to 4 (or 3) monitors ??

I did prefer the sabertooth as it gives dual gig ethernet but I can just buy a dual ethernet card maybe ... I have large files on NAS

thanks for all your help

The gtx 760 can drive up to 4 displays, as you would be using the GPU connectors it doesn't matter about the motherboard for video output.

if you want dual Ethernet then you could go for the sabretooth or buy a card as suggested, depends how much a card is going to cost to find if its worth getting the uprated mobo.

Graphics/Display Question for this Spec (and general spec validation)

Hi everyone - great forum!

My spec below is for general applications/email/excel - nothing too fancy, some adobe from time to time - lots of network traffic though via synology san.

My question is whether I can use the internal graphics card of the Asus X79 Deluxe MB to drive my 2 existing displays. My displays have a VGA input and DVI. (1 of the displays is Samsung LS24A450BWT)

Thanks for your thoughts - looking to order today hopefully!

The integrated GPU is on the CPU, the motherboard just supports it by facilitating the connections on the back panel. In your case that motherboard does not support integrated graphics. So you will need to add a low end GPU, at GTX 610 would be about the minimum you could get away with.

Apart from that, any reason why you went for the x79 platform over the z97 platform? I think the z97 platform would be better suited for your needs as you could drop in an i5 and get a cheaper overall build and run from integrated graphics if you wished.

I am just curious what's the purpose of dual NICs?

My understanding of these is pretty limited but I do know they are typically used for data transfer and stuff to increase overall speeds etc. The OP mentioned they were using the PC in a high traffic environment so I'd guess that's what its for. You also get redundancy should one of the NIC's fail (usually) but as I said my understanding is limited so could be totally wrong :)

As with everything in computers you can use dual NICs for loads of boring stuff. You can do something like connect to your network of computers/internet/printers etc then use the 2nd one for connection to data for backup or recall. I think that would be a fairly common use. Steaky is right about redundancy too, they 2 ports usually have different controllers so would be very unlikely to suffer failures at the same time giving redundancy. But it really depends on the setting, you can do all sorts of networking wizardry with them.

As far as the OP goes, if you are happy to pay for the x79 platform then go for it, just add the GPU and you are all set.

Final Check on Spec -- H80 quiet? leaks ??

Looking for thoughts on spec below. This is for mainly work around word, excel, email, some photo light touch up (rare). I have 2 monitors to drive from this, one is VGA other DVI hence the specific graphics card. I really want a QUIET system -- any thoughts on noise and stability of H80 ? I read online about leaks ?!

Finally, to avoid any delays in the order I'll place the order on a credit card instead of finance.

Thanks everyone.

I think the h80i is overkill for the cpu you have chosen, the triple copper heatpipe should be as good at stock clock speed. Any specific reason for windows professional?

csol

hmm.. dont fancy windows 8 - not yet anyway

you think its better to switch to 3copper heatpipe and avoid leaks too ?

I didn't mean windows 8 but your choice of windows 7 professional as opposed to windows 7 home edition. I don't see the point of the h80i if you are not overclocking your cpu which you can't since it is not unlock for it.

I use remote desktop hence Pro.

emmmm one Q.. you said I cannot overclock -- I thought that it was possible to overclock -- how can i get an unlocked cpu for OC ?

keynes

I use remote desktop and I have windows 7 home edition. A cpu that has a -k- at the end is unlock for overclocking
