Any advice on my new RTX 3080 build?

Hey!

This is my new build I have ordered, specifically for gaming. I am going to be installing the RTX 3080 on this when its out! Do you have any advice/recommendations on this build that could make it better/more efficient?

I could spend an extra £300-£400 if I wanted to (but I will only do this if it's really necessary!) The cost of this build was £962 (not including the price of the RTX 3080 which we cant buy yet!)

I have a 1440p monitor at 60hz however I might upgrade to a faster refresh rate in the future. I plan to use for Flight Sim 2020, and other general gaming.

Id really appreciate your feedback, and Ive only just placed the order so I can cancel and reconfigure if I really really needed to! cheers!

Could you provide the links generated from your builds so that we can easily advise? Makes a huge difference and saves us from having to start from scratch each time.

You definitely want to be looking at an AMD system but you ideally want to be looking at an 8 core build (3800XT).

It's not a must, but it would very much be recommended. The game is going to be optimised for XBox, which has an 8 Core AMD chip in it..... very much like the 3800XT (possibly even a stripped down version of it entirely). This basically means that the architecture should take the most advantage of producing the best results. Anything above that is going to help to add to the performance but not to the same degree as features that it's actually designed for.

There is another angle to consider. The 3070 is said to be as powerful as the 2080Ti so the 3080 would be considerably over-shooting the mark of what you require. FS2020 doesn't use a HUGE amount of GPU power. I think my 2080 could handle 4k without too many issues for example. Having the modern 3070 would be more than enough for any level of 1440p. The 3060 would likely have it but for the shear value and availability (October) I think the 3070 makes the most sense... along with a build like this...

I personally wouldn't put all my eggs in the one basket with regards to the storage but this is a personal thing. I would want a 500GB primary drive and a 1TB game drive personally.

Brilliant, I will implement that CPU into my build! Thanks for explaining that as I had no idea. I didn't think I'd need one that powerful as I'm planning to upgrade to a 4K display but as it has 8 cores and has the features I need it seems like a very good idea.

I will do some research on the 3070 as what you've said is very interesting. I was going to go for the 3080 as it seemed very future proof but if its way over-shooting the mark then maybe a 3070 is a better choice. I will be playing games other than flight simulator, so I will have to consider future games that will require a really high-end GPU, but I've read a lot about how the 3080 will have lots of problems with bottle-necking as not many processors can keep up with it (none in my price range anyway!).

A question about the cooler, do I need a water-cooled CPU cooler? I have heard good things about the standard AMD cooler so I wondered if I could save a few quid there?

Thanks for your insight on the storage. I might reconfigure so I have a small OS M.1 drive and a games drive as I don't really save much to my computer other than game files.

Thanks again for your help!

A little bit of an update to my situation! I have managed to increase my budget to around £1800 by selling old PC parts on eBay (this budget does NOT include the GPU), so I was wondering if you guys had any insight on where I could increase performance on this build? I want the best bang for my buck on a PC for what I have stated in this thread!

Just as a reminder, I use a 60Hz 1440p 27 inch monitor, but I plan to upgrade to a 4K monitor soon (possibly with 144Hz).

I plan to use the PC for gaming, with games such as MFS2020, Mount and Blade Bannerlord, Total war series, COD Warzone, RDR, and new titles that come out! I will also use for virtual machines with Oracle VMware some of the time!

I could stretch my budget to £2000 if really necessary. I would just like the PC to be as future proof as possible!

If this means upgrading to a threadripper CPU for example, or a i9 10900K, or the case, I am all ears.

Thanks in advance, I have really appreciated your feedback!

This is very luxurious and uses most of the budget. Ticks every single box and paired with the 3070 or 3080 will make for an outstanding all rounder.

If you're selling on your old PC and want to keep the license for Windows you could transfer it onto this build and save the license money.

Thanks for that advice again Scott!

For the 3070/80, would you guys recommend buying and installing myself? I know how to install a GPU, however, I didn't know if it would be better to wait for PCS to release it and have them build it into the system.

I would personally hold off on the GPU until the reviews come out. You know you want the PC though so I would be placing the order. You will likely be in a 4 week build queue so you will have time to add the GPU at any stage should you wish to do so. You will be far better informed in a couple of weeks to know which route to go down but you will also be 2 weeks into the queue which means less wait time ;)

Just to confirm:

the H115i is the ultimate in CPU cooling...quiet, efficient and looks good too

I just got a build with a AMD Ryzen 9 3900 12 Core CPU and the H115i, it rocks. Just converted ~20 blu rays, running all the cores at 100% and it stays in the 50-60C range (only a bit more than idle) without making more noise than at idle.
