My problem
Sorry if this sounds a little long winded (it's my first gaming PC), but I'm going to try and put as much information in this post as possible.
I have owned my PC for 2 months now and I keep getting crashes to desktop and on very rare occasions a full system restart. These crashes will happen without fail every time I game, sometimes it'll happen within this first game or first 5 minutes and other times I can play for 1-2 hours without a problem then all of a sudden it'll crash. Note: when it crashes after gaming for 1-2 hours without issues the next game I load into a game it will crash straight away.
When the system crashes my screen will freeze for 1-5 seconds before I get back to windows and the Radeon bug report message for driver timeout.

NOTE: I get increase noise from my GPU prior to my crashes. Think its coil whine from what I have read online/ YouTube.

Games tested:
Call of duty Warzone (most problems but most played)
Destiny 2
Apex legends
Flight simulator
Forza horizon 4
Rocket league

Benchmarks:
Heaven
3DMark time spy

NOTE: PC NEVER CRASHES IN BENCHMARKS.

What I've tried so far:
Ran games on lowest settings & capped frames as low as 100FPS
Removed and reinstalled games on both M.2 & SSD.
Updated windows.
Clean Install of windows (didn't use flash drive)
Updated chipset drivers.
Updated BIOS.
Various different AMD drivers with and without Adrenaline software. (Used DDU for driver removal)
Ran Ryzen mater in game mode.
Ran memory at stock speeds without DOCP.
Removed GPU and re-seated.
Removed cables and re-seated.
Contacted PC specialist Technical regarding my PSU been 100W below the recommended for my GPU according to XFX website.

I'm free all day today if anybody has time to assist me that would be great.
Thanks Tom. :)

Hi mate, I suspect it's your PSU that causing the crashes. You'll be running that really close to the wire with those parts, in fact I'm pretty sure they recommend a 700W minimum for the 6800XT

Hi Steveyg,

Yep that was my thinking, but technical support kind of swerved my concerns away from PSU. According to XFX website minimum is 750W.

Wanted to get some other opinions before I spent some more money on a new PSU as I thought an underpowered PSU would cause a full reboot?
Underpowered PSU can cause loads of differing symptoms:

According to XFX website minimum is 750W.
Same 750 W requirement listed on AMD also.

Question for you gurus out there - the card draws 300W - via two 6+2 PCIe power connectors I think? Am I right in saying that a single 6+2 is rated to supply a max of 150W? And if so - then two connectors give the 300W required but theoretically without any headroom over PCIe connector spec regardless of PSU. In which case I guess then that the higher rated and higher quality PSU's simply are better able to live with this without issues - as in, they would have better margin over the minimum spec?

I think it's the probelm again isn't it - simply working out your total wattage needs and getting a PSU that covers that, even with loads of headroom on total system power, just isn't dealing with the issue of an individual component supply limits. Higher end PSU's with have more ability hiding in the background than the cheaper yokes - even if the numbers all look the same.....?

My setup has 1 8pin connector at the PSU to 2x 6+2 (daisy chain)
I'm going to try get my hands on a 850W RMx and run two individual cables, hopefully this fixes my issue. I'll report my findings.

Good call.

I imagine the TXm is still 'technically speaking' rated for 150W x 2 via the daisy chain from a single PSU output. But the upgrade seems like the only sensible plan. (y)

Only benefit is a minor cable management one I expect. Just can't compete with separate supplies I would think.....
I don't even think it helps that much with management of cables, certainly doesn't look better and the two cables will be going to the same place so you can just cable tie them together. Preaching to the choir I guess though

I imagine daisy chaining will disappear soon when people really start to cop onto it, especially with the newer gen GPU needing so much juice to run

It's just a way to make limited PSU output options still work with multiple connections at the other really isn't it? In which case I wouldn't be too surprised if the lower end PSU's keep them for a while yet!

I never knew Scan even existed! Just browsing their website now.

My goodness we are so badly off over here - PCWorld bascially your only choice apart from a small number of smaller retailers who struggly with supplies anyway.

My plan is to stock up here next time I'm in NYC.... (y)

OHHHH NOOOO...Just tried queuing into a Warzone lobby 3 times and didn't make the plane jump 😭😭😭

PSU's are plug and play right? nothing I need to change in bios for the extra Wattage.
