Evening all, hope you are well.

Can anyone give me some feedback on the below build? First timer here, console gamer all my life. Whilst I have tried to educate myself online, it's a bit of a minefield.

Monitor - I was actually going to use my LG C4 42 inch old tv as a monitor as it will be used exclusively for gaming. I know there is concern regarding g desktop burn in.

Uses - exclusively gaming. May try VR in the future. Mainly play singleplayer games and wish to play at max settings in 4K. Raytracing etc play some multiplayer games but just for fun, not competitively. No streaming or content creating etc.

Max Budget - no budget really, although I want to be sensible and don't want to go overkill on specs considering the exclusive gaming use.

Few minor changes and I added the Silver warranty (A no brainer). Don't bother with 3rd party AV, the in-built defender is all you will want/need. Most others are intrusive and cause nothing but trouble with driver and network integration (not to mention they can be resource hogs and use you to mine, etc, etc, etc)

Wasn't a bad stab though. Not convinced you need the 4090 in honesty, the 4080 Super would be a better fit for your TV setup. Do you know the refresh rate of the TV? There is a performance gain, I'm just not so sure it's worth the extra outlay (itro extra £700). Would make far more sense to put the money away for an upgrade down the line.

Hi Scott, thanks for the reply. I believe the LGs refresh rate is 144hz.

I agree the 4090 is probably overkill, I am open to the 4080 too.

CPU - Was the 7800x3d a good shout considering ill only be gaming on it? I did look at the 7950x3d but I won't be running any secondary programs. I read you can disable the other 8 cores but it seems a pointless exercise for my needs.

RAM - what is the benefit of splitting the memory into 2 x 16gb as opposed to a single 32gb. I assume anything over 32 for gaming would be a waste.

Thanks

Scott

4080 Super should be more than enough. The main consideration is that the 5080 is going to be more powerful than the 4090, so having £700 saved to splurge on it makes far more sense than to opt for the 4090 just now. It just depends how easy the money is to spend though, I couldn't part with the 4090 price for gaming.

7800X3D is the best gaming CPU. You can get some very slight gains with the 7950X3D but they are very title specific. The 7950X3D is only sensible when there are multi-core workloads in play as well as high end gaming, otherwise separating gaming with the 7800X3D and production with the 7950X makes more sense.

RAM is dual channel. This allows 2 sticks to do 2 things at the same time. Having one stick of RAM is like trying to fill a bath but only opening one tap. It gets more complicated when considering 4 sticks, but that's not without its merits too (just not in this case).
