Advice on my spec! With a budget of around £2,000...

Hi all,

Thanks for taking the time to visit my thread!

I run my own theatre company and I'm wanting to begin creating online content, with plans to move onto creating short films, and other online material. So I would want a PC that could easily handle software such as Adobe Premiere Pro and Photoshop! (4k videos)

I will also be using it as the main place where I will do all my admin and what not for my business. So I essentially need it to feel smooth and fast.

Below are the specs, my budget is around 2,000 so I'm kind of there already, but if there are any suggestions on things I would need to upgrade, or things I don't need as much of, I'm all ears! Or of course if you feel like what I've got will do the trick, then I'd love to hear that too!

I don't know loads about custom builds, I'm quite a novice! I was planning on getting a MacBook Pro till my Brother suggested a custom build, which brought me here!

Thanks!

* Since posting I've been reading some of the forums and I've tweaked my spec a little. Taking away my SSD and just having 1TB Samsung M.2 instead, and then changed my case*

Let me know if there is anything you would change!

Hi Clownspace,

That's a good-looking build, but there are a few things I'd consider changing.

I would suggest using faster RAM - I'm not familiar with video editing requirements so I'll assume 32GB is enough (and 2x16GB sticks is the best way to get that), but go for the 3200MHz or 3600MHz parts or your CPU will spend most of its time waiting for data from RAM.

The 2060S is generally recommended for 1440p gaming - I don't know if the requirements for video editing are more or less demanding so I'll leave that part of the system to better educated forum members.

For storage, SATA SSDs aren't that good any more. I'd get two 512GB PCS M.2 drives and a 2TB standard HDD like the Seagate Barracuda. You can install your OS and commonly used programs on one M.2, use the other one as a workspace for whatever you're editing at the moment, and use the HDD for bulk storage. You could play around with replacing one or both M.2s with a Firecuda for even more speed (a 256GB PCS drive and a 500GB Firecuda is only £45 more than the two 512GB PCS drives).

I'm not up-to-date with CPU coolers but you might want to go for an all-in-one liquid cooling system to get the most out of your CPU. The Noctua cooler are good but I'm not sure it can keep up with your CPU as well as the top-end AIO units if you're running all the cores flat-out for a long time. Again might be worth waiting for someone who knows more than I do to weigh in.

Finally, pick up the Silver warranty. It's only £5 and extends the collect-and-return window by 11 months, which is great.

Hi Grinty,

Thanks for your response! I really appreciate it!

I've tweaked the things you've suggested! I.e the RAM and SSD storage!

I did a bit more research and I've landed with ''8GB NVIDIA GEFORCE RTX 2070 SUPER'' for my graphics card!

and for the cooling system I went with ''PCS FrostFlow 240 Series RGB High Performance Liquid Cooler'' as ''corsair H100I RGB platinum CPU cooler'' isn't in stock.

I picked up the warranty as well! thanks for that, I didn't even realise it was just a five!

Now that I look at this with fresh eyes I'm circling around to what I end up recommending in most of the threads I join, which is the glorious Inferno L2. I don't know why it wasn't the first thing I suggested. It's a review build that PCS have put together, which means you can't customise the internals but it comes with a massive discount on the price. The system you've built there has 16GB more RAM and a ~30% faster M.2 drive but is £500 more expensive because of the discount on the Inferno.

You could buy the Inferno and see how it goes. If 16GB of RAM isn't enough for video editing then use some of the £500 saving to replace the 2x8GB sticks with the fastest 2x16GB sticks you can get through PCS's upgrade service in your online account. (you might think you can get the same result by just buying an extra pair of 8GB sticks and running 4x8GB, but that's a trap - you'll get the best memory bandwidth for the 3900X by having just two sticks at the highest clock rate you can)

Video editing in premiere just got interesting as they have added more hardware encoding to things (using nvenc) so faster gpu helps, well technically more cuda cores helps, but you know what I mean. I've just replaced my editing laptop, gone for 2070super

Memory, on amd fastest possible and multi channel

Disks, have a fast one for your swap/scratch drive, actual video partition doesn't need to be as quick, or you could use proxies to edit with, save you some memory and disk speed requirements, at the expense of pre-processing the videos at first.

Thanks @Grinty though however tempting to get Inferno, I'm not a fan of the case, and I think I want to get the more RAM straight off the bat, as it seems thats gonna be the best for me! The Inferno doesn't allow me to get a few other things which id want aswell, like the...

''WIRELESS INTEL® Wi-Fi 6 AX200 2,400Mbps/5GHz, 300Mbps/2.4GHz PCI-E CARD + BT 5.0''
''24x DUAL LAYER DVD WRITER ±R/±RW/RAM''
''FRACTAL DEFINE 7 BLACK QUIET MID-TOWER CASE''
''32GB Corsair VENGEANCE RGB PRO DDR4 3200MHz (2 x 16GB)''

Ive managed to get it down to £2,010...Which is near what i have to spend!

Thanks for your response @Charlas, do you think I need to change any of it in then? if so, what would you change it too? or do you think its all good to go?

Hi @Scott , it seems your are one of the moderators and you've commented on quite a lot of the forum stuff, so it would be great to get your opinion, before I go ahead with the build! Thanks!

The Gen4 PCIE Nvme may show a slight benefit, but not enough that you'll be able to tell, but hey always get the best you can afford I say, might pay off in the long run, and honestly, if you're only going to use the spinning rust for storage that's fine, if you want to edit off it, skip, editing 4K video from a hard disk is just hell, believe me.

Hi both!

Thanks for your posts! @Nursemorph I have changed my cooler and gone with the 1TB M.2 Gen 4!

@Charlas thanks for the info, I'm assuming you mean to up my M.2 to more? So, Ive gone with 1TB M.2 so I can use that drive to edit when needs be, let me know if that's not what you meant!

So below is where I'm at...

I'm probably at max budget now, spending a little more than what I thought I might, so I would love to get your thoughts on the below specs...

Yeah upping the nvme is a good idea, storing on disks are fine, using them is hell, my editing laptop has a 1tb main drive nvme 970 evo, and a 2TB Sabrent Rocket for editing. Not sure what video you will be editing, how long, resolution, bitrate etc, but I'll warn you 4K footage can eat space real quick, just bare that in mind.

Just for example an hour of 4k 10bit YUV is about 4TB in size, obviously that's the extreme scale as I'm sure you won't be shooting in 10-bit YUV, but even a normal ish 1 hour of h264 is around 100Gb, h265 will bring size down to 75ish, but then is a lot more intensive to work with from a cpu/gpu point of view (just working on the time line)

So long story short, make sure you have specced it for YOUR use case, as you will know how much data your working with.

Premiere can use around 70% addition to the files your working with for temporary space, proxies, timeline encodes, but by default is limited, so remember to set the temp sizes correctly when you use the package, makes a whole load of difference to the usage performance if your not knee capping it with its temporary storage.

My temp storage is on the system partition (fastest drive) and my injest (work) is on the 2Tb second nvme. Worked on stuff gets archived off to external storage and Google drive for safe keeping.

I would add a 250GB Scratch drive. You would be surprised how quickly 32GB of RAM gets eaten up. When you spill onto the cache, you want it as fast as possible (M2, 970 Evo is the obvious one).

Thanks guys! All this has been massively helpful,

I was going to get a MacBook Pro till my brother suggested going down this route instead, so I'm glad for all your responses!

So below are my finalised specs, what do you all think?

I will be mainly editing 10 minute short films (4k) for my Theatre Company, creating trailers for my upcoming shows, editing photos in photoshop, and somewhere down the line creating longer short films, but as it stands I just need a computer that is smooth and works with ease!

So I guess my question is do you think that the final specs below would suffice?

Looks good, should have no problems breezing through almost any workload upto RED footage, and will make a mac book look a little silly to be honest. An equivalenish mac Pro would be better part of 8 grand, just think of it that way (and still have a junk Gpu in comparison)

Yeah that'll do exactly what you want. It's also a first class all round system so, quite literally, anything you want to do with it going forward, it's ready for (VR, Gaming, etc).

Really top class build.

There is only one more minor consideration I can put forward. The Define 7 is one of the best cases you can buy. It's really quiet yet offers excellent airflow. If you were to pay the extra for the H115i RGB platinum cooler, I think it would really compliment the build better. Forget the RGB element, as that's not important and can be switched off. The relevance is in that it's one of the most efficient coolers money can buy and it uses magnetic levitation fans. What this would mean for you is near silent operation as the fans don't need to work as hard due to the efficiency of the cooler... AND... when they are working, they are silent other than airflow noise.

That's a good point, reason my server is in a cupboard is the noise 😂

Got a custom loop dual water system, but the 240 rad isn't enough to be honest, need to put a second in at some point, this Xeons run frigin hot!

Makes life difficult though as have to use rdp rather than local access unless I run a 10m dvi and usb run.. Luckily don't game on it so matters not, the quadro is for its processing only

This is fab, there were so many options going in, I'm glad I got something that you all feel will work for me!

I totally read your comments about the cooler on other posts yesterday @Scott and tried putting it on my build but it said it was out of stock so wouldn't let me proceed until I changed it. But out of curiosity I just had a look again and its let me today! So below is what I'm gonna go with...

Back again..... remove the bullguard.... you don't want that in messing with your network. The stock Windows Defender is what most of us will trust ourselves, and recommend to others :)

It's just a hassle having it in and having to remove it etc. Better to just go without to begin with.

You won't be disappointed in the slightest with that rig. There is no stone unturned now. If you get the chance, if you could feed back your thoughts on it all with a small review or something of that ilk it would be appreciated.
