7800x3d booting to safe mode during testing

Has anyone else ordered a 7800x3d or other 3d chip and had a call from pcspecialist saying it fails to boot? I got a call advising to change cpu as system would only boot to safe mode with 7800x3d but would work fine with 7900x so had to switch to the latter. They tried a gigabyte mobo and lowering ram speeds and neither worked. I am pretty dissapointed as i only use my pc for gaming and nothing else so the 7800x3d was the perfect cpu for me, Was also looking forward to trying the 3d cache tech aswell. Has any one else had an experience similar to mine? Pretty gutted.

It's all a bit up in the air, it's a known issue on the current stable BIOS for X3D chips for anything over 5600MHz being unstable, but normally disabling EXPO temporarily until AMD / Board partners roll out a proper fix gets by the issue.

But perhaps PCS know something we don't and there isn't going to be a fix.

But I definitely wouldn't change CPU if you're gaming, 7800X3D is definitely the one to go for.

Thank you for replies. The ram i have selected is 5600 so that should not cause an issue. I asked the tech if it was specific to my config or across the whole am5 platform and he told me across the whole platform with the x3d chips yet they are still selling it in configurator so i dont understand. He also said that it will be fixed in the future with bios updates but could be months and i need the pc now so decided to go 7900x and to be honest the way he made it sound as if its my only choice and i also don`t want to wait months. Thats a bit strange to not test with EXPO off as i would be happy with 7800x3d with EXPO off as it will likely be sorted in the future.

What are you using the pc for?

I wouldn't move to the 7900x personally, it's a big step down.

I would just order with the base 8gb and source your own
I asked him about changing the ram and he said he already tried it and the only option was to change cpu, cpu has been ammended to 7900x and is fast track build so prob to late now.

That's because they won't supply it with DXPO disabled

Disabling expo bypasses the issue. Then when the fix is rolled out just reenable expo and it should be fine at 6000mhz

Thanks for the advice i decided to stick with 7900x to save the hassle and will upgrade to a future x3d chip down the line. i only have a 60hz screen anyway and play at 4k so will be less difference .

There's something very off here IMO. This doesn't seem like sound advice at all, I wonder why they are pushing the 7900X chips so much. If anything, the 7700X should be the replacement.

Someone somewhere is counting beans and thinks because the pile has the same quantity it means it's a good compromise.

Hi guys after receving the pc and speaking with pcspecialist they are going to let me rma the pc and swap 7900x for orginally chosen 7800x3d with EXPO turned off. I am worried the boot issue with 7800x3d and EXPO on will never be fixed, I dont want to be stuck on lower speed ram forever. What is the frequency of 5600 ram with EXPO off? and my mobo is asus rog strix x670e-a gaming wifi. What is asus like with these types of issues, How long do you think a fix could take? I saw the latest bios update for my mobo was 15th may so farely recently and does it require a fix from AMD`s side to? Thank you

It's simply a BIOS issue that they rolled out an emergency fox that limited voltages too far just to keep people safe.

You can already run an AM5 system perfectly fine with 6000MHz, you just have to know how to manually tune the RAM.

All the update is doing is sorting out the voltages required while remaining under the ceiling.

Same thing happened on AM4 and AM3 before it. It's perfectly normal.

AMD are a tiny company compared to Intel, it takes them a bit longer to get things stable on new chipsets.

AMD will roll out what's called an AGESA update and then board partners create a BIOS update that includes it.
