4K-RTX 3080 Non-competitive Gaming Setup

Hi all,

Spent some time putting together this setup. Current price is sitting at £1,858 and I am willing to push the boat out to £2,000 for the PC if necessary.

I'm shooting to really maximise my immersion for demanding games like RDR2, ARK, RE Village on the high graphics at 4K. Note I don't play many competitive FPS games, so really I'm going for visual quality over competitive capability. While the build was built entirely with gaming in mind, being an undergrad student it'll also get used most days as a work station.

I've set aside part of my budget to invest in a 28" 144Hz 4K Samsung G7 monitor. Reading this post convinced me to go 4k144Hz to make full use of the 3080.

I'll make some notes on thought process/uncertain areas on the spec list below.

Cheers.

Case
COOLERMASTER MASTERBOX TD500 MESH ARGB GAMING CASE
  • On recommendation of this post. If you think any cheaper cases would do the job function-wise, I have no problem losing some of the flashiness.
Processor (CPU)
Intel® Core™ i7 Eight Core Processor i7-10700KF (3.8GHz) 16MB Cache
  • Is this a good match for the 3080? Some comment on this choice of CPU would be appreciated.
Motherboard
ASUS® PRIME B560-PLUS (DDR4, USB 3.2, 6Gb/s) - ARGB Ready!
  • Wasn't entirely sure what to look for when it came to motherboard. Some guidance here would be helpful.
Memory (RAM)
16GB Corsair VENGEANCE RGB PRO DDR4 3600MHz (2 x 8GB)
  • After reading the guide, decided to upgrade from 2666Hz to 3600Hz. I don't believe I'll have any need to go to 32GB.
Graphics Card
10GB NVIDIA GEFORCE RTX 3080 - HDMI, DP, LHR
  • Probably the point of interest. Wasn't an 'on-a-whim' decision of course, but open to recommendations to downgrade if you think it's possible to achieve what I want with a less powerful GPU.
1st M.2 SSD Drive
1TB PCS PCIe M.2 SSD (2200 MB/R, 1500 MB/W)
  • Chose the M2 based on recommendation from the guide
1st Storage Drive
1TB SEAGATE BARRACUDA SATA-III 3.5" HDD, 6GB/s, 7200RPM, 64MB CACHE
  • I've never found I've needed more than 1TB of hard drive storage, personally
Power Supply
CORSAIR 750W RMx SERIES™ MODULAR 80 PLUS® GOLD, ULTRA QUIET
Power Cable
1 x 1.5 Metre UK Power Cable (Kettle Lead)
Processor Cooling
PCS FrostFlow 100 RGB V3 Series High Performance CPU Cooler
  • Some input on this would be appreciated

Godlike
Pushing the boat out a little, but in my opinion you just can’t get a well balanced 4K gaming PC for £2k without cutting some corners. You’ve obviously done a lot of research which is great to see, but some areas are still a little undercooked.

Case
COOLERMASTER MASTERBOX TD500 MESH ARGB GAMING CASE good case choice
Processor (CPU)
Intel® Core™ i5 10-Core Processor i5-12600K (3.7GHz) 20MB Cache The 10700 was a good CPU in 2020, but it has been eclipsed by both AMD and Intel CPUs. The 12600k will offer much better performance for the same price.
Motherboard
ASUS® TUF GAMING B660-PLUS WIFI D4: ATX, LGA1700, USB 3.2, SATA 6GBs - ARGB Ready Appropriate motherboard to handle the 12600k.
Memory (RAM)
16GB Corsair VENGEANCE RGB PRO DDR4 3600MHz (2 x 8GB)
Graphics Card
10GB NVIDIA GEFORCE RTX 3080 - HDMI, DP, LHR
1st M.2 SSD Drive
1TB INTEL® 670p M.2 NVMe PCIe SSD (up to 3500MB/sR | 2500MB/sW) With higher end systems we try and fit 2 m.2 drives in so that the OS and games drives are separate. This gives you multiple lanes to work with, so the PC can run OS processes and games concurrently, and it also means that if your OS drive gets corrupted you don’t have to reinstall all your games. This is something that can be added later on though.
1st Storage Drive
1TB SEAGATE BARRACUDA SATA-III 3.5" HDD, 6GB/s, 7200RPM, 64MB CACHE
Power Supply
CORSAIR 1000W RMx SERIES™ MODULAR 80 PLUS GOLD, ULTRA QUIET Nvidia recommends at least 850W for the 3080. I would opt for 1000W as to keep playing the latest titles at 4K you will need to upgrade your GPU during the lifetime of this build. Future generations of GPU have been forecast to be very power hungry so the extra headroom is very important.
Power Cable
1 x 1.5 Metre UK Power Cable (Kettle Lead)
Processor Cooling
Corsair iCUE H100i RGB PRO XT Hydro Series High Performance CPU Cooler This will provide ample cooling. PCS don’t have a powerful enough air cooler to handle the thermal output of the 12600k so this is quite pricey, but it is well worth it.

Hey. Appreciate the swift and very helpful response.

After some reconsideration, I've decided to downgrade to a 3070 and switch out the 28" 4k144Hz monitor for a 34" 1440p144Hz ultrawide. Based on a combination of the recommendations you made and your own setup, I've come up with the following specs.

Case
COOLERMASTER MASTERBOX TD500 MESH ARGB GAMING CASE
Processor (CPU)
AMD Ryzen 9 5900X 12 Core CPU (3.7GHz-4.8GHz/70MB CACHE/AM4)
Motherboard
ASUS® ROG STRIX B550-F GAMING (DDR4, USB 3.2, 6Gb/s) - ARGB Ready!
Memory (RAM)
16GB Corsair VENGEANCE RGB PRO DDR4 3600MHz (2 x 8GB)
Graphics Card
8GB NVIDIA GEFORCE RTX 3070 - HDMI, DP, LHR
1st M.2 SSD Drive
256GB PCS PCIe M.2 SSD (2000 MB/R, 1100 MB/W)
  • For OS (thanks for this tip, I hadn't considered putting them separately)
1st M.2 SSD Drive
1TB PCS PCIe M.2 SSD (2200 MB/R, 1500 MB/W)
  • For games
1st Storage Drive
1TB SEAGATE BARRACUDA SATA-III 3.5" HDD, 6GB/s, 7200RPM, 64MB CACHE
Power Supply
CORSAIR 650W TXm SERIES™ SEMI-MODULAR 80 PLUS® GOLD, ULTRA QUIET
  • Originally opted for a 1000W power supply, but the site suggested this was far in excess of what this setup needed

1 x 1.5 Metre UK Power Cable (Kettle Lead)
Processor Cooling
Corsair iCUE H100i ELITE CAPELLIX RGB Hydro Series High Performance CPU Cooler

Again, a few tweaks would be recommended to get this new build on point. The 5800X3D is arguably the premium gaming CPU in AMD’s current line up, so I’d switch over to that. Motherboard with integrated WiFi and Bluetooth. Drives adjusted for speed and capacity. And I would seriously recommend staying with a 1000W PSU. I went for a 750W unit (for my machine with a 3070) a few years ago and am now thinking I’ll need to upgrade when I buy my next graphics card. Far better to spend a little extra now and save yourself a lot of hassle later on down the line…

Hello. Thanks for the tweaks, much appreciated. Sounds like 1000W is the way to go, so I'll forgive myself for going £22 over the budget to accommodate it.

Just one question - what's the reasoning behind upgrading the smaller SSD from 256 to 500GB and taking out the hard drive?

No problemo! Happy to help.

Even these super fast M.2 drives will slow down as they start to reach half capacity, having your OS drive with plenty of space will ensure a snappy and responsive system. You can also note the differences in read and write speed between the PCS drive and the Samsung 980, as it uses the NVMe protocol for insanely fast data transfer.

As for dropping the HDD, that was mainly a budget constraint. You could pop it back in or add one in at a later date, it’s an easy enough upgrade job 👍

Sounds good, looks like I've found my config. Thanks again for the support :)
