Hello,

I'm thinking of the build below.

I won't be playing any games. Just writing Python software. I would like to be able to drive a 4k screen in the future. Though I do not have one yet.

What specific graphics card does that have as I would prefer fanless.

Could it be tweaks to be better in any simple ways?

I am planning on installing Linux on it. I will install it via USB stick.

Hi. Yes, I would prefer quiet. I considered the Fractal Design 7 case too. But after watching some reviews, discovered that it only has good cooling if the door is left open. I have a young family, so that is not a good idea for me.

I don't really have a max budget. But am happy with the current cost. I could spend another £100 or £200 if it would make me happier.

I'm also concerned about maintenance. I am buying another PC as the quadro on my current pc is running at 90C when idel, so probably doesn't have long left. So I am hoping the U14s isn't too hard to clean.

Just for info, if the quadro is running that hot, it needs sorting, don't just leave it as an expensive card to burn out. If it's overheating it will be because of bad airflow due to case or cables, or issues with the physical fan or fan profile.

We can definitely amend the build to make it more family proof and quieter but it will add to the cost not detract.

Regarding the cooler, it's fully closed loop, so zero maintenance other than usual dust, but case is excellent and will minimise this anyway.

Thanks for taking the time to help with my research. Do you have water cooling in your PC? I've read that they only last a few years before needing replacement.

I’ve got the H100i which is the model down from this one, I’ve had it in for about 6 years running 24/7 and it’s still as good as it was on day one.

You may be referring to custom loops or open loops which are a completely different thing and need annual maintenance.

These don’t require any maintenance at all.

Plus this Hxxxi ranges can be software monitored with iCue so you can monitor temps, pump speed, fan speeds etc. That would also link into the extra fans you ordered so you can control speeds where necessary. You can also set alarms and auto shutdowns should an emergency occur.

However, I downgraded the motherboard to a B550. It turns out that almost all X570 boards come with chipset fans. While most reviews say they are inaudible, a small number of people have complained of them making annoying whining noises. And others are concerned of them becoming jammed with dust.

MOBO:

Reviews on B550 boards are few, but this one (I know it's for 3900x vs 3950x) states:

"There's an 8+2 power stage arrangement paired with two very large heatsinks, which is a huge step up from equivalent B450 boards in the TUF range. Those heatsinks kept the VRM temperature, as measured by our external IR probe, below 50°C with our Ryzen 9 3900X"

According to this, the M (micro atx) it keeps the CPU cool, though they could not measure the VRM. They are slightly concerned about the VRM design and secrecy, though it seems to perform well.

Cooler

For the cooler, there are multiple sources that say the U14S is suitable for the 3950x:

I genuinely know nothing, just respect what I read on here.

I wouldn't know what difference the 550 and the noctua cooler made. Although as I write VRM was one difference and the 115i is regarded as the best cooler going. The latter might be more to do with sound though than actual cooling? If the chip is cool enough then you're good I guess.

I think the 3950X is overkill for your uses, by quite some margin. The 3900X would likely be overkill but it's an excellent all rounder.

Regardless, you want the X570 and the H115i RGB platinum cooler IMO. The B550 is probably up to the task, but it's by no means ideal. The Noctua is not going to keep boost clocks running at optimal, the high end AMD boost clocks are very sensitive to temps. It'll run fine, but it'll run hot and the fan will be at full speed just to keep it close to optimal. The Corsair unit would do a far better job.

Additionally, I would go with the Define 7. Any comments about the door being open are just absolute garbage. I don't know who that reviewer was (I do recall it from a while back) but it stinks of a bias to me as the airflow through the Define range has always been top notch. It has a grated pattern all the way around the front of the panel and has good fans at the front that allow for free air-flow. I actually struggled to create a positive pressure as the air was so free on the Define 6 (the 7 is better).
