1st Storage Drive and 1st M.2 SSD Drive?

I’ve done a couple of quotes which are roughly the same spec save for the chassis.

One question I do have though is...on one laptop I have the option for a ‘1st Storage Drive’ and then ‘1st (and 2nd) M.2 SSDDrives’

Whereas, on the other... I only have option for ‘1st (and 2nd) M.2 SSDDrives’ - no option for a 1st Storage drive.

Why is this? I’ve posted the Specs (up to the SSDs below

Option 1

Option 2

Chassis & Display

Most modern laptops don’t have SATA bays anymore, they take up a lot of space and are much slower than M2 drives anyway, so on thin and lights like the defiance, and most premium laptops from any manufacturer now, it will all be m2 storage.

So I’m better going for the Defiance for a few reasons -

I can get the 1TB M.2 (as the 1TB SATA was out of stock when trying to select it on the other one)

It’s got a bigger battery capacity

And, am I right in saying the RTX 2070 Super is slightly better than the 2070 Max?

Yes, I'd say correct on all counts. The defiance is a really premium chassis.

And yes, absolutely right on the GPU also, the full fat cards are quite substantially better than the Max Q cards. The Max Q's apart from being weaker are (IMHO) very overpriced also, they just don't make much sense.

You’ve been tremendously helpful,

Thank you kind Sir

You're very welcome :)

I wonder of I can pick your brains again?

Having re-looked at the specs above, I may have been mistaken.

The RTX 2070 Super is available for the Proteus but not the Defiance.

This means going for the Defiance will been more storage and battery life while taking a hit Graphically (Defiance has the RTX 2070 Q MAX)

Is the trade off worth it?

I wonder why I cannot get the Defiance with the superior Graphics card? Is it a compatibility issue or they just don’t offer it?

Thin and lights.... the trade off of having such a thin light notebook is that heat has to be reduced as cooling isn't as sufficient in such a small chassis.

That’s strange though as the Defiance CAN get the RTX 2080 Super! Which i assume is even more powerful.

I think I’d rather lose the battery power in all honesty which pushes me towards the Proteus over the Defiance.

As the Proteus still has the option for two M.2 drives (and the SATA originally in question, I assume I can configure the Storage the same way as the Defiance?

Yes, you can still only choose 2 x M2, just means you have a spare SATA port for a large HDD if you wanted in the future.

Really sorry to hassle you again but if I select to use the two M.2 SSD’s when configuring, it doesn't ask me where I want to install the OS.

If I do choose the two M.2 drives (a 1TB and a 256GB) how do I know which drive the OS will be installed on?

I had this issue when I opted for two M.2 drives. I contacted them and they told me they usually install it on the fastest one as standard. But you can request whichever one you like on the phone or over live chat and they'll leave a note for whoever builds your unit :)

I assume out of the two below then, they will install it on the 1TB

1TB SAMSUNG 970 EVO PLUS M.2, PCIe NVMe (up to 3500MB/R, 3300MB/W)

250GB SAMSUNG 970 EVO PLUS M.2, PCIe NVMe (up to 3500MB/R, 2300MB/W)

After asking a few questions on another thread (thanks to the helpful users) I’ve come up with my final build.

Can anyone give it a once over and let me know if it seems decent and if I’m going to encounter any issues in any areas I might have overlooked? Additional thoughts or suggestions are always welcome!
