16" Lafité AI - Linux Compatibility

Would be interested to hear if anyone has any knowledge/experience regarding Linux compatibility (e.g. latest Linux Mint) for the 16" Lafité AI - https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/computers/lafite-pro-16.

I'm looking to replace my 8 year-old 17.3" Cosmos and initially the 17.3" Lafité Pro seems the obvious choice (there's bits of stuff around that suggests Linux compatibility is fine), but can't find anything regarding the 16" Lafité AI.

With the 16" Lafité AI (compared to the 17.3" Lafité Pro) it looks like you can sacrifice a bit of screen space but gain a fair bit of screen resolution and also get the Intel Core Ultra CPU (does this avoid the 13th/14th generation issues ?), all for ~£20, which seems well-worth considering.

I've installed Kubuntu 24.04 on mine.

All seems OK.

Wifi and Ethernet, Bluetooth, sound and camera all working. As is external HDMI.

Can't find a keyboard LED driver (yet?) but it's just a dim white backlight to the function keys, which is fine.

Thanks for the update, I’d taken the plunge and ordered last week, pleased to say everything seems to work fine initially with Mint 22 Cinnamon (based on Ubuntu 24.04).

Certainly happy with the 16" Lafité Pro up to now, my criteria was a screen bigger than 15.6”, resolution > full HD, 2 TB SSD and no OS, and this ticks all the boxes without having to pay a fortune for a gaming laptop. Maybe not as stylish as a Dell but function over looks is fine by me, if it does as well as the 8 year-old Cosmos V it’s replacing then that will be fab.

Also pleasantly surprised by it being less than a week from ordering to delivery.

As the Lafite is a Clevo chassis, you may have some luck with Tuxedo Control center which includes keyboard backlight controls

Tried that, thanks, as I'd used on on my old 15.6" Lafité.
But it doesn't work. Might just need to be told that it can, but given that the standard result is OK, I'm not rushing to find a solution.

Back in March I got the keyboard lighting to work on a 15.6" Initia using a Novacustom fix. See <https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/forums/threads/initia-keyboard-led-backlight.96704/#post-737957>. That was with Linux Mint 21.3.

A couple of weeks ago I upgraded to LM 22.0, but the keyboard leds no longer responded. I tried uninstalling the fix and reinstalling, but that didn't work. I wondered if it was the change from the 6.5.0-25 kernel which came with the original 21.3 "Edge" installation to the 6.8.0-47 which came with 22.0, but on contacting Novacustom, they said that they'd got LM 22.0 and 6.8.0-47 to work with one of their computers based on a Clevo (with Tuxedo keyboard). They also added that with their own computers they no longer supplied a software fix, and now provided their own firmware fix. Interestingly, it might no longer be just a "Linux" issue, as I came across < >. There were other reports of similar issues, and I think fan control was also affected. I hadn't got round to trying the github fix that you tried. I doubt I'll bother now as you had no success.

I don't understand why the keyboard leds no longer respond. They cycle through the colours at boot, then stay on blue. Something changed between 21.3 and 22.0. :-(

Not sure what happened with the reddit link. I see it appears in the quote above with MEDIA at each end and a lot of unwanted space. It was a straight link in my reply at <h t t p s://w w w.reddit.com/r/GamingLaptops/comments/zqmegi/clevo_control_center_no_longer_supported/> (I've added spaces to hopefully stop it repeating the strange link).

A further word of explanation. I see the <[MEDIA......MEDIA]> link only appears in the draft reply before I post it, and there is no white space. Once posted, those words disappear and the wasted space appears. Very strange.

Well, what you seem to be posting is a link to an article, so not sure why you'd use a [Media] tag, which is really for videos content (and yes, I know the word 'media' in general doesn't mean only video content).

The PCS forum allows you to simply paste the URL into the reply and it will automatically put the tags around it so that it displays as a link.

As I tried to make clear, I didn't add the MEDIA tag. It was somehow generated by the link, as was the white space. Note also my first post at 11.18am where I added a link (<https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/forums/threads/initia-keyboard-led-backlight.96704/#post-737957>) which was quite normal and didn't result in a MEDIA tag. It's something the reddit link is doing, not me. In fact I copied the link from a text editor (xed) which I use to compose messages as plain text, and then paste them into first posts or replies such as these.

If you copied the share link, then it contains a lot more than the direct line to the thread you wanted...
Code:
https://www.reddit.com/r/GamingLaptops/comments/zqmegi/clevo_control_center_no_longer_supported/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button
...so the forum will try and parse the lot to see if there's a picture/button/etc. to display.
