£5,500 and it's telling me my front USB ports will be disabled?

Trying to build something very powerful for game design.

It's telling me that my USB ports will be disabled and no liquid coolers are available due to "a lack of internal USB ports" on the motherboard.

But there are only 2 motherboards selectable and neither does the trick.

Spoke to Kevin on the webchat and he said "it might be a bug".

Any insights gentlemen?

Yes, you're looking at the X299 platform: long obsolete and not actually that great when it was new.

Depending on your requirements, you should be looking at Intel's 13th-gen Core platform, or Ryzen 7000. That will get you modern features (like USB-C front panel connectors, lol) and much, much, much, much better performance.

Can you explain your needs and your budget?

My budget is under 6k.

My need is high end game design.

X299 is the motherboard? How do I get access to a decent motherboard?!

These are the only options it is giving me:

Rather than clicking "INTEL® CORE™ i7/i9 EXTREME COMPUTERS", you click "TOP SPEC INTEL® CORE™ COMPUTERS" (or the equivalent AMD option) and get to more modern systems. You need the Z690, Z790 or X670E chipsets for what you're doing.

I don't know precisely what high-end game design needs in terms of components. Is it heavily multi-threaded, e.g. lots of rendering assets/project files? If so, a 13900K may be warranted (though personally I'd prefer the 7950X). What do you need in terms of storage? I'm a little alarmed at the idea of 40TB of hard drives in a system. I'd suggest getting a proper storage solution (probably some kind of NAS, whether custom or turnkey) and working out proper backup arrangements.

First off, let me thank you guys for all this free and quick advice.

I am kind of amazed that you know more than the person I spoke to on webchat, who told me the warning on that motherboard was just a bug.

I am going to have a go at a build using the base you both suggest... although if you have any builds to suggest, I would continue to be very grateful ^^

Regarding my needs, game dev tends to require a mix of things at different stages of the cycle. Sometimes heavy graphics, sometimes lots of processing (e.g., baking lightmaps) and a lot of storage.

I confess my ignorance I am not sure what a 7950X is, I assume a processor?

Here's an option based on the 7950X, which is indeed a CPU. It is AMD's most multi-core CPU. The main restriction is that PCS don't support AMD CPUs with more than 64GB of RAM. The alternative is an Intel system with the 13900K, such as the one you posted. Do you actually need 128GB of RAM? You'll know better than me!

Anyway, here's the system I'd probably recommend:

Case
CORSAIR iCUE 5000T RGB MID TOWER GAMING CASE This case is very expensive and unnecessary, though good. The 5000D Airflow would be entirely adequate and £150 cheaper

Dude... First you save me from wasting 5k on a totally inappropriate motherboard... now you are improving my build.

THANK YOU.

Since you have been so generous, I cannot resist asking again for your insight -- what case would you suggest? I am not worried about budget inside 6k, but I do like a QUIET COMPUTER. If there is a case that is best for that, I could happily forgo the lights and other stuff (I am more of a all-black-everything kind of dude).

Yeah, and it's not just the motherboard: the CPU is also old and slow. Very glad to help!

You want airflow above all to keep the noise down. So with the offerings PCS has, the only good option is the 5000D Airflow. My preferred option would be to do a "send in your own case" (it's really easy, just order it off Amazon and you can ship it straight to PCS for them to build in) with something like the Fractal Meshify 2. That's a big case that offers really good airflow, relatively subtle looks, and a huge amount of space to add hard drives to.

You could go the silent route with the Fractal Define 7 XL, but frankly its airflow isn't that good and I wouldn't put a 4090 in it to keep it cool.

With the hard drives, it's not that it increases the possibility of data loss. It's that any drive can fail. If it's a 20TB drive, it's going to be jolly difficult to have a good backup in place! Much better to have a good system with built-in redundancy (a NAS with a RAID setup would be the ideal) to my mind. Your approach isn't bad, but to me it makes the possibility of catastrophic failure more likely. With any component, it's not if it fails but when it fails and so the important thing to do is to work out the mitigation in advance!

My dude, eternal gratitude.

I am a bit lazy for the send your case option, and want this machine ASAP also (please don't judge me ^^).

I also think I will need the extra RAM because of the enormous copy-paste operations and multiple windows I'll need to run.

So I went for a build using your hard-drive specs but with the intel base and bigger RAM. I also opted for the 5000D airflow, but it's telling me my components won't fit -- however they WILL fit in a 4000D airflow. Seems strange? Does the 4000 suck? (so to speak!)

I wound up going for this (to make it agree everything fits in the case):

The case thing is weird. It certainly should fit in the 5000D Airflow because it's essentially the same layout as the 5000T: my guess is that's it's a bug. In any case, the 5000D Airflow is out of stock for now, so you can't do the fast-track order with it. I see your new post goes for the Hyte Y60: it's OK, but it doesn't have great airflow. I'd honestly not put a 13900K and a 4090 in it...

No judgement: if you need it and are willing to pay the extra for fast delivery, it makes sense!

With the RAM, just be aware that you end up giving up performance as 128GB of RAM is only possible at 4800MHz speeds, which is very slow. If you need the capacity, fair enough, but it will cost you in other areas quite significantly.

With your new post, I have to say I don't agree with your storage still! RAID 1 offers one thing: if the primary drive fails, you have no downtime. It offers no protection against fire or theft or viruses or a water leak on your PC. The 970 Evos are also not that fast: for your needs, I'd be inclined to want better drives. (The Firecuda 530s would be ideal to my mind.) Do you actually know how much data you're likely to create?

Dude appreciate this many thanks.

The storage problem is that I need to store multiple game projects which, with the pipeline we have, is going to run to 1.5TB per project.
I will also need an asset library on the drive (not online) to bring things in and out of game projects.
I have probably messed up the RAID thing entirely... so you're saying I should have RAID on both? And use Firecudas?

Unfortunately the case bug makes it impossible for me to buy the thing. I push proceed and it forces me to select a new case :/

Also removing the priority build speed seemed to save a grand? Very confused :) but feedback invited, appreciated, and rewarded in the afterlife

No, I'd have RAID on neither and have proper backups. I'd go for:
  • A 500GB/1TB boot drive, a 530 Firecuda
  • A 4TB "current project" drive, a 530 Firecuda. Would that be enough?
  • Another SSD for the asset library: you'll presumably know how big this needs to be?
  • Beyond that, maybe some big-ish hard drives for archival stuff or where speed is less important.
For all this, I can't emphasise enough how important back-up is.

You can't order that case for fast-track delivery right now, so it'll need to be something else. The Y60 is an option, albeit not the best. I'd still go for send-in-your-own-case, but I guess that could detract from the speed of the delivery. I'd be less concerned about it with the 7950X, but the 13900K is an utter furnace!

Here's what I might suggest (noting that you've accepted 2-3 weeks for delivery now?):

I brought down the RAM as you suggested, hadn't realized more RAM affected performance but I could see how that would be true

Yes I have conceded to the slower delivery to try and get this case... your argument for it as the quietest (because best airflow) combined with it being plain, is just too seductive for me to resist.

THANK YOU for the configuration. I will delve in and investigate now ^^

Dude I'm loving what you built here.
RE the drives, I think you are right. These will be sufficient -- and much safer now you've explained ^^
My only question is cooling. Is there any reason not to get the very best liquid cooler? And the upgraded thermal paste? I am more than 1k under my budget so I would be happy to spend more for a quieter / faster machine
