£4000 4K gaming build

Afternoon all!

Firstly, yes I know that is a lot of money to spend on a rig but my current PC is over 10years old and apart from an upgraded PSU, it is quickly becoming a slow running one not fit at all for gaming (RIP i5-2500K). I am not fussed at all about RGB as I want my computer to run smoothly and not look like the Blackpool illuminations!

Purpose of this build?
Future-proof massively and a build decent enough for 60fps 4K gaming on the likes of Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 (once all the addons become available too), Train Simulator and so on. I have saved up enough over the years to 'splash' out and want to not worry about upgrading bits and bobs over the next few years.

Current monitor in use is a Samsung 28' 4K UHD U28E590DS https://www.samsung.com/uk/monitors/uhd-ue590/LU28E590DSEN/

The build list below will not be with a customisable URL (sorry) as certain products I am keen on are out-of-stock or not available yet. *Notes will be made on certain components.

*1 Would DDR4-3200 RAM be sufficient? I was looking at maybe getting 3600 or 4000mhz but these are not selectable speeds on the lists or is the price difference not worth it.
*2 Ah the big GPU debate. Still waiting on true 3090 benchmark figures but the 3080 does look impressive instead. 3090 would be ideal for true futureproofing otherwise what would people recommend on the 3080? The ASUS TUF looks good.
*3 Storage time! The purpose of this SSD is to store most other files and including some games.
*4 Storage time again! This M.2 card will have the OS and I was wondering if it would be beneficial putting Microsoft Flight Simulator on it? Or will it be better on the SSD.
*5 850W PSU seems adequate right? This unfortunately is out-of-stock for now. Would 1000W be overkill?
*6 I much prefer fan cooling over watercooling. I just think of the fail-safe procedures and what could possibly go wrong with the water. Noctua make excellent fan coolers but this one isn't available until mid November(!), would pcspecalist be able to provide a suitable fan cooler alternative if I phoned them?

Far too many notes and what ifs(?). Happy to discuss this further.

Cheers,
Jack.

Looks good - I'd recommend 2 x M.2 drives - you can always add internal or external drives whenever. 32GB memory is good, you can always upgrade with newer RAM kits later.
I've seen some leaked 3090 benchmark tests on YouTube which don't give a massive increase (for the price) over the 3080. Having said that my choice will be a 3090 due to my VFX/Rendering requirements.

There'd be almost no benefit to the 3090 for your purposes, it's not a gaming card, it's for rendering and scientific workloads, the 3070 would be a better fit for the monitor you currently have, if you wanted an appropriate monitor for the 3080, you'd need a further £1000 just for the monitor.

With the money you save with @Nursemorph build, I would strongly suggest putting the spare cash into a decent monitor like this:

Or 4k 144Hz:

I'd say a 3080 is fine. Benchmarks have shown that the 3080 is not capable of 4K 144HZ on most games, and has show to be something more like a 4K90 card for most situations, especially with games running at Ultra. The 3080 has shown to be more of a 1440p 144hz card, with benchmarks from techpower up showing an around 20 game average of 154 FPS at 1440p and a 20 or so game average of 97 fps at 4K with a founders 3080. 3090 might be overkill, but it will have better performance in 4K and can still be used as a card for gaming should he want, but I agree it is a huge chunk more money for a small increase in performance, apparently around 10-15% increase in 4K gaming. I would agree however, that having a 4K60 screen might not be the best when having a card that can do 4K90+

He has a 4k budget and you're recommending him a sweatshop own brand ssd thats gunna be just as slow as a hard drive from 1992 and as for you spyder stop misinforming people about 3070s when you have a 1080 running 24gb of ram running at 1600mhz you do not have the knowledge or the right to be telling people what to buy when you have a 4k monitor but ur card is going to be running it at 40fps what are you playing on a microwave? Also Spyder, the 3080 is barely capable of doing 4K 100 FPS gameplay, so what makes you think the 3070 is going to be able to do it. The 3080 is not a 4K 144HZ card, nor is the 3070 a 4K 100HZ Card. The benchmarks don't lie let him get a 3090 if he wants its in his budget you jealous peasant.
That's a bit rude mate, calm it down

I had my build delivered yesterday with an RTX 3080 and the NZXT 511 case . Airflow is alright, but nothing great. I would go for a better case if you're not that bothered about aesthetics. It looks great, but I know there are much much better cases for airflow out there. The CPU gets a bit hot, even with the corasair h115i platinum. Its because the h115i fans dont get much airflow - there's a small intake on the side of the case which doesnt get enough air to the fans. Look at the 'Nvidia 3000 confirmed details' if youd like to see a photo of my build. Its on page 16 i believe.

Thank you all for your feedback, really is appreciated. Having seen multiple videos now about the 3090, I don't see the true justification on spending £1000 more for 10-15% extra performance. 3080 seems the way forward, HOWEVER, with it now being strongly rumoured that a 20GB rtx 3080 is on the way next month, I may to see what happens.

Will definitely look into a bigger case for airflow. If I contacted pcspecialist personally, are they willing to order specific parts not listed on the drop down menus? (3600/4000mhz ram, cpu fan coolers like notcula NH-U14S).

PCS won’t be able to source individual parts they don’t stock, although saying that there’s no harm in phoning and asking them about it, I may well be wrong.

I called them up asking if I could give them some parts from my old PC, such as my SSD, and they said the only thing you can pick externally from PCS is the case, so I don't think so :(

Hello all, update! So I've decided to wait and thankfully it could pay off. I'm looking now of going down the AMD route.

5950X looks brilliant on the benchmark reviews and also might get RX 6900XT when it gets released too but for now selected 3080 on the configurator.

One question though...chosen 32gb DDR4-3600 (4x8), but would it actually improve performance over 32gb DDR4-3200 (2x16)?

I would say you need to re-visit some elements of that build. The case is not suitable for the hardware you are putting in there and the Noctua just isn't going to keep the CPU cool when the temps in the case rise. I would never recommend an OC on an AMD chip for any sort of gaming/generic use either.

The previous advice given on the build was much more sound, and an AMD build was also suggested at that time but seemed somewhat dismissed (just given your sudden realisation that AMD was the way to go and being remiss of most other aspects).

With the RAM, 2x16 is better than 4x8 as you are putting less load on the memory controller, which is a process in its own right. 3200 vs 3600 won't make any odds as the differences in the CAS latency means that they are effectively equal.

It is of course your money though and you are free to spend it as you wish :)
