I was doing some more research on the topic and it could well have been the Norton Game Optimizer which was on by default. I've uninstalled Norton entirely this evening and so far no issues. Will see over the next week if thats has resolved the problem. Very frustrating if a software as well...

I don't think its a thermal issue, as my cpu cooler temp is maxing out ~40 degrees.
