I was up in the Lasithi mountains again last night (1275m) for the peak of the Perseids. In four hours I captured 8 meteors on the camera. I used a tripod mounted Canon Powershot GX7 MkII (so not a terribly expensive camera) with it's max aperture of f1.8 and the longest available shutter speed...
I have a PCS desktop that I bought with Win 10 Home, so that's OEM. It uses a local login (not a Microsoft account).
I have a PCS laptop that I bought without an OS and installed a retail copy of Windows 8 Pro on there, since upgraded (free) to Windows 10 Pro (via Windows 8.1 Pro). It uses a...
These were taken with a Canon Powershot G7X MkII at 1275m up in the wild mountains of Crete. My friend has a mountain hose up there. Zero light pollution....
I'm sure the real enthusiasts on here have better quality images but I was quite pleased with these....
I had a BSOD yesterday, interestingly it was Stop Code 0x1 (APC_INDEX_MISMATCH). That's interesting because I've never had a 0x1 Stop Code before! Anyway, I digress...
In the past I've struggled with WinDbg to analyse the resulting dump and always felt that there is a ton of stuff that I could...
I've noticed the forum website is painfully slow today (9th July 2018). No other websites (even fora) that I'm using are slow so it's unlikely to be my network. Anyone else struggling today?
I'm guessing that many on here will be using the excellent compression toolkit called 7zip. A serious vulnerability has been discovered in all but the latest version so everyone should ensure they're using the latest 18.05 version from...
I've installed the 1803 update on two computers now, a PCS laptop and a PCS desktop. I had an issue on the desktop so I'm posting the details and resolution on here in case it helps someone else.
My laptop runs Windows 10 Pro, upgraded from a retail copy of Windows 8 with a product key. On...
We stream UK TV (legally) via a service called tvmucho.com, they stream 'live' UK TV channels to ex-pats and have a useful catch-up facility too. We've been using them for almost a year without issues, I'm actually very impressed with their service and their support.
In the last week a problem...
I just wanted to post how delighted I am with the PCS after sales support I've just had.
I contacted PCS to ask whether the latest BIOS (3703) for my Asus Z170-E motherboard should be installed or not, I was also wondering whether it had any Spectre updates in it.
I was contacted...
I don't know whether anyone has seen this information already but we're due an upgrade to Windows 10 this month, version 1803 and apparently code-named 'Redstone 4'. There is tons of information from the insider builds on what to expect here...
I had a curious issue the other day when I did a Windows restart (ie. not a shutdown but a restart). When Windows rebooted my second drive (HDD) was missing in Windows. I did another restart and the HDD was still missing in Windows. I did a third restart and booted into the BIOS, my HDD wasn't...
This thought occurred to me just now, and since I don't know how the forum software works I thought I ask here....
The way I use these fora is to click the 'New Posts' menu item to get a list of all new posts since the last time I visited. Because I look at every post (I'm a moderator so I'm...
We're limited for space on the TV stand so I'd like to be able to stand the front of our Sony Bravia TV on top of a BOSE Solo 5 soundbar with a similar sized support for the back legs of the TV (which I'll make). The Sony Bravia weighs 5.2kg and about half that weight will sit on top of the BOSE...
I spent most of yesterday playing with the Windows 10 Fall Creator's Upgrade, newly downloaded to a bootable USB stick via the Microsoft Media Creation tool. I had three goes at clean installing it (I never do an upgrade in place) and all had the same issues. These were....

We have a friend staying with us for a short holiday who is not a computer techie at all, but she can touch type. It set me wondering how many of the techies on here can touch-type. When I started coding in assembler several decades ago the ability to touch type wasn't required, it's pretty...
The issue I have is that I have a smart Sony TV HDMI attached to my PC, and a set of external speakers attached to the PC.
I use VLC for playing movies on the TV from the PC and VLC allows me to set the Sony TV as it's default audio device so that the movie sound comes through the TV speakers...
I seriously doubt that anyone on these fora are still running Windows XP but just in case, Microsoft have just released a patch for Windows XP (and Windows 8) to close the vulnerability this attack exploited. All other supported versions of Windows should have been patched back in March.
See...
The two prototype Razer three-screen gaming laptops have been stolen from CES. Come on, who has them.... ;)

It's been a few weeks now since I took delivery of my latest PCS built PC so it's review time. Here's the build......

It's been a good many years since I've owned a desktop PC, I've been using laptops for longer than I care to remember. My last desktop PC had a CRT monitor that took up half the desk space.
I now have an Asus PAQ238QR Proart 23" IPS monitor (and very nice it is too). I leave the PC on all the...
