Returning to this thread quickly - it seems that it is actually a hardware problem, and the bearings are probably shot.
My thoughts that it was to do with Linux, etc. were simply coincidence, and it's a hardware fault that had been getting worse over time. May have to return it to PC Specialist...
Right, I have no idea what was going on at the end of the day, but I found some fan controls for Linux, that allowed me to set sane values, and now everything is working great.
(mods, I'm not sure if I can name it, as it's probably a bit of a grey area..!)
I installed Tuxedo Control Centre...
Well, I opened her up and look a look. The fan looks as good as new, no dust or anything.
I gave the whole thing a high level clean, with some compressed air, and replaced the back panel. Thought that had done the trick, but after about 15 minutes the grinding began again.
Here's the odd thing...
Of course, it could just be that the fan in this system has always been this noisy, and the heatwave is just making it work harder. I only noticed it in the past week or so.
Eep! The interweb gives the impression that one can fix this issue by spraying compressed air into the various vents. Hmm, I'm not sure I'm brave enough to attempt all that other stuff.
I got hold of some compressed air and gave that a go.
Laptop fan is still buzzing, though, so will probably need to open her open and look around. I think something's come loose.
All,
Sadly, after about 18 months of ownership, my 15.6" INITIA's fan has started buzzing when it's running.
Does anyone know how easy is this for me to check myself, to see what's going on? Googling suggests the bearings have gone.
Is it easy enough on this laptop to remove the back and...
I've had my laptop for about a year, and have never been able to bring the machine out of suspend. I'm trying to work out if this is a Clevo thing or a Linux thing.
Laptop is an AMD 4600U, 15.6" INITIA, 32GB RAM.
Whenever I suspend, the machine switches off (keyboard lights off, etc.), and the...
I think you're going to have to Google that one, STUANDERSON326.
The kernel module is made by a competitor to PC Specialist, so linking to their website is probably against the forum terms and services.
I'll just say that the name of the firm starts with a T and is a type of suit one can wear :)
Hi SteveAC,
I'm still on the Cinnamon desktop, using the follow:
Linux nova5 5.8.0-55-generic #62~20.04.1-Ubuntu SMP Wed Jun 2 08:55:04 UTC 2021 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
NAME="Linux Mint"
VERSION="20 (Ulyana)"
ID=linuxmint
ID_LIKE=ubuntu
PRETTY_NAME="Linux Mint 20"
VERSION_ID="20"...
It's been a long while back since I installed the module, so I can't remember exactly where I got it.
But this might help?

It's definitely...
@spoo333: it has been recognised, yes. I'm using Mint 20 Ulyana on the laptop. It's reported by xinput to be:
FTCS1000:00 2808:0101 Touchpad
I'm actually not a touchpad fan, so I've turned it off (in the Cinnamon desktop setting) and use a USB wireless mouse instead. But I can confirm it does...
Thanks! Give it a whirl, but it didn't make a difference. I believe the issue lies with the way the Linux kernel is currently handling the 4700U CPUs:
https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/drm/amd/-/issues/1230
Looks like I'll need to wait until that's fixed. I don't think it'll be all that long, and...
Ah, okay. Some further googling has revealed others with AMD 4800U CPUs having similar issues, so perhaps a firmware update or kernel update later down the line will sort it out. The hardware is maybe a bit too new.
So, for anyone wondering, this laptop works more or less perfectly with Mint...
Thanks! Hmm, I might be out of luck here. I took a look and dmesg for ACPI says that it supports:
ACPI: (supports S0 S4 S5)
Running:
cat /sys/power/state
produces:
freeze mem disk
Finally:
cat /sys/power/mem_sleep
results in:
[s2idle]
Trying to do:
echo deep | sudo tee...
