PCSPECIALIST 28 Core Intel and 32 Core AMD CPU's annaounced

Interesting times ahead for the CPU market: https://www.theregister.co.uk/2018/06/06/amd_threadripper_2/ I'm happy to see AMD offering credible alternatives to Intel again, although I must admit I am so far out of date around the actual differences between them that that statement might be...

PCSPECIALIST Fancy a change to win a free 8086K processor?

As part of the 40th anniversary, Intel are planning to give away 8086 8086K processors. The competition is here - https://game.intel.com/8086sweepstakes/ (though at time of writing, not actually open for another couple of days). Apparently the i7 8086K (which I hadn't even heard of, til Ouss...

PCSPECIALIST Windows 10 versions no longer supported

I know some of you don't like to let MS manage updates and/or be on later versions of OS, but were you aware that some versions of Windows 10 are End of Life (EOL) and will no longer receive even security updates? If you're on build 1607 or below, you are one of the ones not getting them...

    PCSPECIALIST New secure DNS servers

Any of you folks seen the news about the new "Quad 9" (9.9.9.9) DNS servers that are hooked up to IBM's X-Force security backend to protect against, e.g., DNS hacks? https://www.theregister.co.uk/2017/11/20/quad9_secure_private_dns_resolver/...

    PCSPECIALIST Odd networking response

This is an odd one. Connected only by LAN, with the other interfaces disabled. IPv6 disabled in the network settings. NSLOOKUP returns IPv6 addresses.... Frankly I am at a loss on that one. The firewall/gateway is also set to respond preferentially with IPv4.

    PCSPECIALIST Well that was weird...

Just had Windows 10 Fall Creator edition do the oddest thing. Bearing in mind I wasn't touching the keyboard or mouse when this happened but all of my screens suddenly lost their colours and went greyscale. Even weirder shutting it down and rebooting it or the UAC (updated the Intel...

    PCSPECIALIST 15mm 2.5" HDD's

Just a throwaway comment - wish Clevo et al would build a 15" laptop chassis that could take one (better yet two) of these thickness. You can buy 5TB laptop drives now, but they're all 15mm high and way too big for most laptops.

PCSPECIALIST Windows 10 Fall Creators Edition

Just an FYI this begins being rolled out on the 17th October. Interesting, I read that one of the fixes making it into this edition is to cure stuttering in games - that's the exact problem* I had after an in-place upgrade to Creators Edition which went away post-fresh install. Just thought...

    PCSPECIALIST New slimmed down Defiance

https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/desktop-pcs/defiance-xs/ Looks very nice but I'd have serious question marks over cooling. Mine can get hot enough under load! Any thoughts?

    PCSPECIALIST Browser security

See a fair few posts on here about good applications to run for keeping your new shiny desktop or laptop in tip top health. Thought I'd add a few ways to keep yourself safe when browsing the internet. First off your choice of web browser. In Windows it depends what I am doing but I do tend...

PCSPECIALIST Defiance II two year review

I just realised I am a couple of weeks away from my Defiance II turning two years old. My review after year and a bit is here - https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?51946-Defiance-II-a-year-(and-a-bit)-on Since then, I've gone through the pain of doing an in-place upgrade to...

    PCSPECIALIST ***** TP-Link (moan!)

Dang them (TP-Link). Used their TL-WN722N for some time as it was Atheros based. Just had to buy a new one and it turns out a) it's Realtek based and b) likely doesn't have monitor capabilities. Of course they don't warn anyone, do they??? Grumble.

    PCSPECIALIST Vodafone Fibre

If anyone who cannot get Virgin is interested, Vodafone are currently putting together some impressive packages for fibre (to the cabinet). I've just moved from BT Infinity Business which was £48 + £6 for 4 static IP addresses (ex VAT) + £34 per month line rental to Vodafone Business Fibre...

PCSPECIALIST What's your preferred flavour of Linux?

Back in the day I tried Ubuntu. Great for running a non-GUI server but didn't play nicely at the time with the hardware I had. I've been a long-term fan of CentOS ever since it was shipped with Asterisk back in the day. Always liked it's clean and simple look and feel but decided I wanted to...

    PCSPECIALIST Petya ransomware

Hey folks Just to inform you that our security team have ID'd the three most common attachment names for the above (primarily sent as attachments in email): • myguy.xls • myguy.exe • Order-20062017.doc The advice is, as ever, ensure your AV and antimalware is up to date, have regular backups...

PCSPECIALIST What games would you like to see made / remade?

As per the title what games would you like to see made / remade? For me, it'd be Half Life 3, Portal 3 and Left 4 Dead 3 as new games and I'd like to see the Halo games rewritten for the PC (Halo 2, being the last).

PCSPECIALIST Unable to access forums via mobile

Here's a weird one. My mobile on EE won't connect to the forums on mobile data. It's absolutely fine from the same handset and browser if the phone's connected to WiFi. When you try to go to it on the mobile network it gives the PCS page but displays an "Oops something went wrong" message.

PCSPECIALIST Quick Q re Defiance II

Have the 15.6" version - anyone happen to have, to hand, the actual screen dimensions (just the screen not the bezel)? It's not important - just need to get them and don't have a ruler to hand! I can grab them later if needs be. :)

PCSPECIALIST Don't install Windows 10 Creators Edition....

Not my advice...MS's. Seems that particularly if you have older hardware you may hit issues https://www.theregister.co.uk/2017/04/26/stop_downloading_win10_creators_update/
