Loud fans on my laptop.

Hi,

I've had my laptop maybe 3 years now and my fans have always been pretty loud and unpredictable. Finally I decided to see if there's anything that can be done.

My laptop is currently sitting idle, using the Control Center application that came with the laptop my GPU is currently showing at 42'c with the fan speed at 30%, my CPU is around 46'c with a fan speed at 30%, to me that's not too bad sound wise. The issue is that sometimes the temperature and speed of spikes for no reason. I just started downloading something and within seconds the temperature of my CPU jumps to 80-90'c with fan speed at 72%.

Hi, when did you last perform maintenance on that laptop? Did you ever clean it? How did you set the PLs?

Hi, I did a full system restore last month. I wiped everything and started again because I had no audio, this fixed that issue. The loud fans didn't change though, it's been like it since I got it out of the box. I am not technical enough to change the power levels, everything is as default out of the box.

Meant laptop maintenance at a hardware level ie, taking it apart, cleaning out heatsinks and fans, and repasting the GPU and CPU?

That needs to be done once a year to maintain thermals, otherwise will overheat

Out of the box, PLs are typically very high, and thermal throttling is nearly guaranteed. Run a CPU stress test (such as Prime95 or AIDA64) to see whether you are thermally throttling.

That cosmos is easy to work on, I'd recommend, getting some kryosheet rather than pasting, just follow the numbering on the internal screws, and do them back up in the reverse order

I took the back plate off my laptop and to me my fans look clean enough, obviously not spotless but nothing to consider it being blocked. Like I say, I've had this issue since day one. I've even used a 'Cooler Master' laptop stand at all times to keep the air flow clear.

I'll try replacing the thermal paste, is there a certain size of kryosheet I should get?

If you get the 50 x 50 and use a decent razor knife, that should cover both the GPU and CPU (as they share the same heatsink.

I would still properly clean the fans while you've got it open, it's the heatsinks the fans rest on where the dust normally collects, you won't be able to see it until the fan is off.

Oh, in case you weren't aware, you have to clean the current paste off properly with some isopropyl 99% and a lint free cloth (personally I just use kitchen paper), otherwise after you've applied the new paste / kryosheet, it still won't make proper contact and just overheat again.

I agree with @SpyderTracks ; you can get the custom-cut size (50x50mm), which should be sufficient for both, or look for the pre-cut CPU/GPU standard sizes.

Can you post a screenshot of your CC profile settings? I'm not sure what version you have, but you should find something like that.

Just a few tips:
1) It is quite expensive, but I'd consider buying the IETS GT500. It's very good at helping reduce temperatures and has a lot of dust filters, so dust build-up is a lot slower than without it. https://www.amazon.co.uk/IETS-Powerful-Turbo-Fan-Infinitely-13-17-3inch/dp/B09FJBYQ7Y
2) You can try either Arctic MX-6 for thermal paste (my recommendation after using dozens of different pastes), a Kyrosheet like SpyderTracks mentioned, or phase cooling like PTM7950. I believe Thermal Grizzly just released their own phase sheet recently.
3) You can also set custom fan profiles in the Control Centre. For example if your GPU reaches 70c, you can have your fans set to operate at 90% speed. You can also use Fn + 1 to manually put your fans at 100% if you're running a demanding game.
4) Last resort is to potentially look into undervolting. I personally haven't tried this with my laptop as temperatures are fine, but on my PC an undervolt can reduce temperatures quite significantly without affecting performance much (if at all).

I'm not going to lie, I was highly skeptical that taking the laptop apart and giving it a clean was going to do anything. Like I mentioned before, right out of the box it was very loud with the fans, I just put it down to the laptop not being great and while the sound bothered me, I didn't want to complain about it.

So I took the laptop apart, following the instructions given by Martin doing the screws in number order to take the heat sinks off. The fans were clean, barely any dust on them so they were not an issue. I cleared off the thermal paste that was on the CPU and GPU then applied the Kryosheet, closed everything up, turned it on again....Bob's your uncle I ran my computer for 10 minutes, ran some stress tests, the temperature peaked at maybe 47'c? Fans didn't go over 30% usage and it was quiet. Early days I know but hopefully that has solved the issue.

It seems the issue was the 'ARCTIC MX-4 EXTREME THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY COMPOUND' that I paid extra for in the build, either it wasn't very good or it wasn't applied correctly.

Quality of the paste won’t matter on a laptop, as it has to be cleaned & repasted regularly anyway.

The Kryosheet just does away with the need for that part of your regular laptop maintenance.

Paste degrades on a laptop fast, so has to be cleaned and reapplied about once a year or it overheats.

But the Kryosheet not only doesn't degrade, but it's quite a lot more thermally conductive than paste anyway, so will keep temps reduced even further still. So you'll never have to worry about repasting again. You'll still have to clean fans though.
