Hi guys,

So I upgraded to windows 11 pro and did a full reset, I checked my account for drivers, found a list, some don't seem relevant to the device and others wont actually

install like the above.....I sold my mini PC which was a chinese brand (miniforum) but at least they had a website where you could select the device model and just get given a series of relevant drivers, doesn't seem to be the case with my recoil 16 laptop, currently everything is working but mainly just pure guess working clicking to install drivers then using device manager to right click and direct to the driver folders I created...

Is there actually a relevant set only for specific laptops, I'm quite suprised to find the support site not have any model selections.

Heres the spec
Chassis & DisplayRecoil Series: 16" Matte QHD 240Hz sRGB 100% LED Widescreen (2560x1600)
Processor (CPU)Intel® Core™ i9 24 Core Processor 13900HX (5.4GHz Turbo)
Memory (RAM)32GB Corsair 4800MHz SODIMM DDR5 (2 x 16GB)
Graphics CardNVIDIA® GeForce® RTX 4080 - 12.0GB GDDR6 Video RAM - DirectX® 12.1

Only option I get is here

No idea what RPL-12L is, ideally it would be saying Recoil 16 with the spec, so I'm not even sure these are the right drivers...

Anyone have a list of the correct drivers or had issues with this kind of thing before?
Thanks in advance

Any windows system, you let windows update find all the drivers, then just install GPU from nvidia and Management driver (control center) from your PCS downloads.

It's changed a lot since windows 7.

If there are any outstanding unknown devices in device manager then you'll need to install those individually from your PCS account.

Your laptop is a TongFang, they don't have a public repository for drivers, you can only source them from your System Integrator (PCS), it's an effort to combat theft and more and more manufacturers are heading that way.

Windows never just finds all the drivers on its own, often requires some 3rd party direction which happened on a few things I had to device manage and point to a folder, then obviously there is the PCS control panel and no doubt other specific things, windows updates in my experience has never done the job 100%, there should be a specific set of drivers for the machine that then windows can update after it knows what all the devices are, for example the touchpad wouldn't work until I pointed it to drivers I downloaded from the site, except the list wasn't tailored specifically for the laptop I have it didn't seem and also advised to install drivers in an order but the driver isn't listed.

I didn't say it did, what was said is that you let windows update find all it can. But nowadays windows update tends to find most drivers because they're certified in the microsoft database. TongFang can be slower than other manufacturers in certifying them. Since Windows 8, driver configuration is very different to how it used to be.

Then only manually install remaining ones from your PCS account.

Then lastly, you need the GPU drivers from nvidia and Control Center from your PCS account.

there should be a specific set of drivers for the machine that then windows can update after it knows what all the devices are

That's not how windows update works, windows update is a catalogue of signed drivers that manufacturer pay to integrate into the windows update catalogue. If a driver set isn't in the catalogue, windows update won't find them, no matter if you've installed an older one previously.

You need to be careful with the language you use, the word 'never' has a very specific meaning, and your statement here is easily disproved. I have had many PCs and laptops where Windows Update has installed all necessary drivers.

ALL the major hardware vendors submit drivers for new products, and updated drivers for existing products, to Microsoft for inclusion in Windows Update - either as an automatic installation or saved in optional updates for a later manual installation (the choice is made by the hardware device vendor). This means that drivers for devices produced by any of the major vendors will most usually be installed by Windows Update.

There are only three reasons why Windows Update will fail to install the best driver...
  • The hardware device comes from a small vendor who either cannot, or does not wish to, upload drivers to Microsoft.
  • The hardware device is very new and the driver, although uploaded to Microsoft, has not yet been included in Windows Update.
  • The hardware device has frequent driver updates so that Windows Update may not contain the very latest driver (common with graphics cards for example).
There are however exceptions for laptops, because laptop drivers are often customised for the specific chassis, either for interoperability reasons (common with graphics drivers) or for power saving reasons (which might affect any driver). Vendors of course do not submit these customised driver versions to Microsoft, only the generic version, so for a laptop it's not unusual to find that a generic driver doesn't work properly (or at all). This is another one of the (many) negative aspects of owning a laptop, and this is likely why @wipe0wt has made the classic mistake of extrapolating from the specific to the general.
