Gaming at 1440p 140hz (maybe 240hz not got a monitor yet) - £2800 budget.

Hey everyone,

I am looking to order a pre-built PC suitable for gaming - preferably at 1440p using high graphic settings.

The "BATTLEFIELD ELITE" pre-configured PC stands out to me, and from my limited knowledge looks like it could run basically any game in high/ultra settings without much struggle: https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/view/Battlefield-Elite/

However, I am not too savvy on what upgrades are necessary to make a "good PC" an "amazing PC".

Thanks for any help - spec below:

Ok you say about playing at 1440p, and upgrading your monitor in the near future, have you a monitor in mind, if just a standard 1440p @144Hz then you don't really need the 3070Ti, ok I've t5weaked the above slightly and come up with this:

Thank you for your response, and many thanks for tweaking the configuration.

In terms of monitor I am not sure, I have read some good things about the LG 21:9 ultra-wide screen although this is not true 4k. I am torn between investing in a monitor that has a 4k display, or a ultrawide screen that really enhances immersion.

My budget for a monitor would probably be around £800

If I were to invest in a 4k monitor, could this PC operate at 4k without trouble?

Also, this might be a silly question - if in say 3-5 years I wanted to upgrade the CPU, RAM or graphics cards... are these PC Specialist builds done with that in mind, or are they left with pipes/cables all over the place making an upgrades difficult?

Thanks

GPU is a simple swap out, same goes for RAM modules. The CPU however will (almost certainly) need a new motherboard if you intend to upgrade to latest gen. Certainly doable but you need to be aware.

Hey all,

I am looking at a gaming (mostly FPS, some sim racing) PC suitable for 1440p 140hz on high/max settings - budget is to spend less than £2,800.

Alongside the PC I'm planning to purchase a new monitor, my current preferred is the Samsung Odyssey G7 27" - which can actually do 240hz so I'm tempted to make sure the build can handle it.

But would be great if there's any other recommendations/thoughts around the 27" to 28" size - although I do quite like the idea of curved monitors.

Thank all,

Any particular reason for 240Hz?

I mean 144Hz is kind of spectacular and by all tests only like 1% of people can even perceive as much as 240Hz, have you used a 240Hz monitor before?

This could be quite a powerful 4K 144Hz build with this budget, seems a waste to be aiming at 1440p 240Hz. Just my two cents mate

The inspiration for 240hz was mainly because I am tempted by the Samsung G7 that can reach such a high refresh rate.

As you say, 144hz is already good... but was more a case of if the monitor can do it why not.

I guess an amazing 1440p 144hz monitor would be cheaper than the Samsung G7?

Nah mate you're missing what I'm saying, you're build can go beyond 1440p so why are you looking there

Think of the levels like 1080p < 1440p < 4K

Resolutions 1920 x 1080p < 2560 x 1440 < 3840 x 2160

With a 3080 you should be aiming minimum 3840 x 2160 at 144Hz which is 4K

My only reason against looking for 4k monitors has been the price of them at the moment :D

Are there any you are aware of that's reasonably priced?

Yeah they are very expensive, if that's the case though then and we want to aim at 1440p then we can amend the build to go for something that saves you some cash without affecting performance. At 1440p the 3070 or 3070Ti is more than you'll need and will let you save a considerable amount

I'll put together a 1440p build here now, as for monitors I would be looking for something like this to suit the 3070

Tighter budget 1440p monitor, a 3060Ti would probably be enough for this one though

That's really helpful thank you, also the Gigabyte monitor looks good.

I'm guessing things like the 1,000W PSU means the build is future proof for future GPU upgrades?

Also can I ask the reasoning behind the SSD's you selected (happy to go with your recommendations, just would be nice to know the logic behind it for future PC builds)?

Edit: the 32gb RAM was more to help with running games at max settings, but I guess GPU is more important and most modern games only need 16gb. It's also easier to upgrade this in the future I'm guessing?

Edit 2: is there much benefit to the 2x8gb 3200MHz vs 2x8gb 3600Mhz.

Yeah no worries

The 1000W PSU is my new minimum to be honest, have a quick look on Google at the leaked power requirements for the new 4000 series GPU's and you'll understand why. I think in the not so distance future 1000W might be considered conservative

As for the M.2 SSD's I went with the 500GB Firecuda 530 for the OS/Boot drive. The goal is to keep this no more than 50% full to ensure that you're OS runs optimally at all times. This is also the fastest drive PCS currently supply so its the obvious choice for your OS/Booting

The second M.2 is the Intel 670p and quite frankly I went for this because it's a steal for the price. It's more than fast enough for any game out there and it's got decent read and write speeds but very good write endurance. It's just a really good piece of kit for the price being offered. Sure there are better faster and more robust options but in terms of value for money I find this one hard to beat at the minute

Just seen the RAM edit

RAM itself does not increase performance, If you have too much RAM the system will simply just not use it and it will sit idle. You either need it or you don't

16GB is more than ample the only games that push past this are Microsoft Flight Sim, some late stage management games or heavily modded titles (think dozens of mods)

As for the speeds due to the timings on the 3200Mhz vs the 3600Mhz that PCS offer there is practically no difference in gaming. The 3200Mhz being CL16 and the 3600Mhz being CL18 in gaming it makes them practically identical

That's excellent, many thanks for the information.

I have one final question... and its about the Intel 670p and 1TB vs 2TB for gaming.

My Xbox One S has a 1TB external HDD that is almost full with only a handful of games on it. Is it worth swapping in a 2TB HDD instead so I have enough storage for long term use?

If so... is the 2TB Intel 670p still good?

Yeah I mean it's all down to how many games you'll have installed and how much you actually need the storage. The 2TB M.2 670p is also recommended. It's a little on the more expensive side so less value for cash but it's still a good performer. In fact I don't think there is a good 2TB M.2 that's good value for money at the minute they all seem very expensive

I wouldn't use a HDD in this day and age they are deathly slow. Grand for storing videos or photos or stuff like that but I would never game from one in 2022

I've got the 1TB in The Berserker as my games drive, its got about 30 games on it, and got about 250GB remaining, unused games generally live on one of the external USB hard drives
That's a fair point, so you just drag and drop games you stop playing as much onto an external USB hardrive?

And then only games you actively play are on the 1TB SSD?

That's the way. Essentially though yes you can just click and drag the file into the other storage device, it will likely try to verify the files and do a sanity check when you drag them back later but it will work just fine
