Wireless Problem

Hey everyone,

So I have my new Desktop from PC Specialist for a little while now and after doing a fresh OS install (Because it kept crashing when I first used it) the wireless doesn't seem to work. (I've tried a fresh OS install multiple times to check everything)

I regret to inform that it's the infamous Edimax EW-7612PIn Wireless PCI-Express Adapter. I say infamous because I've gone threw this forum and have notice quite a few other people seem to have the same problem with it. I've tried updating drivers, reinstalling it. etc. etc. but no luck. I've been trying to fix it for the bones of 2 weeks now and I'm about ready to throw the thing out the window. Ha ha.

The problem is, I can connect to my desired network, but the speed is insanely slow. Registering it as a constant 36Mbps in the networks status. Which is ridiculous considering I should be getting speeds of 300Mbps.

Right now I have these drivers
EDIMAX version: 1.00.0148
Realtek wirelss lan driver version: 1.00.0165

The settings currently on the Adapter are:
802.11d: Disable
Beacon Interval: 100
Preamble Mode: Long only
Roaming Sensitivity level: Low
TX Power level: Auto
Wireless Mode: IEEE 802.11b/g/n

I've tried multiple different drivers, settings. etc. and would appreciate it greatly if someone could help me fix this problem.
(I'm currently using my laptop since the connection is unbearably slow on the computer and chooses not to load pages half the time)

Any help will be very much appreciated, and thanks in advance to anybody who responds.
Sorry for the long winded post, just wanted to get as much information out as possible. :p

have you tried downloading the drivers from the pcs site, under your admin section?

how far's the router from ya pc? Is it near any wireless phones? microwaves? Alot of networks in the area?

Infact as you have connected to the network i dont think it would be a driver issue.

Yeah, I've ruled that out for now.
The router is in the next room. But since my father needs it for the Ethernet I'm keeping it there. And besides that, there is only my laptop. There is another network in the area, but I don't see how that would influence it. Excuse my ignorance. :p

Good, one other network shouldn't make a difference, but if there was like 10-20 then it may.

does ya house have massive thick walls? I ask as thick walls pretty much stop dead wireless networks.

Ah, I see. And no, they don't. When I first got the PC I set it up downstairs and it was fine. But after the OS install it just crapped out. Then I moved it upstairs to my room to try and get it closer since the router is next door.

hmmm, you could change ya wireless channel,

also any chance of being able to connect to a mates wireless?

I've thought about changing the channels but since it was working fine up to the OS install I didn't think It'd be neccessary. Just some stupid configuration setting I was missing or something. And no, haven't tried it on another wireless, that'd require lugging the computer out to a friends. :p

may be worth a try, if it worked perfect then, ya can diagnose ya router and wireless card don't like each other.

I'll give it a try sometime during the week. But, can you think of any other reason it wouldn't be working "properly"?

Also, thanks for the replies, appreciate it.

its ok mate,

Personally I'm not a massive fan of wireless, could never get mine to work 100% perfect, ended up investing in a pair of homeplugs, may be worth a look

Was actually checking some of those out earlier today. May be the best option. ha ha.

I'll consider it, but I'd still love to know what the hell is wrong with this. I've invested too much time to give up. ha ha.
But yeah, If I don't have any luck, I'll definitely invest in one of those. Thanks again man.

if ya find a solution, i'd love to hear it.

I just think its wireless. Is well marketed but in performance its pretty pants. Bit of gimmick good for netbook and notebooks that's it.

The horrible truth. Ha ha.
Would just be handy in my case since my dad needs to have the router in his room. Ah well, maybe I'll just move out and get my own. Ha ha!

I'll be sure to let you know if I fix this blasted thing in the meantime.

Wireless is always a bit hit and miss as it is subject to so many factors that could affect performance.

As suggested above i would change the channel, this can help if there is interferance locally on a specific range.

Also as suggested above although two devices may be a standard, b,g n or whatever sometimes they do not play nice together. Perhaps see if another brand of card is availiable.

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone. But problem solved. I just moved the blasted thing back downstairs. I believe it was the satellite dish for the television messing up with the network as the further I got from the thing, the better the connection got. Though it's in the most awkward place, it works. So thanks for taking the time to reply with your suggestions. Appreciate it.

I'll be sure to drop by if any other problems arise. Ha ha. Thanks again~
