Wireless PCI-E Help

Hi guys,

I recently bought a PC Specialist desktop, however stupidly I added the basic WIRELESS 802.11N 300Mbps/2.4GHz PCI-E CARD thinking I would only be using it temporarily. Now it's come to the scenario where wireless is my only option for a few months and my connection is awful. I have terrible internet speeds anyway due to my location from the nearest 'internet spot' 3 villages away. To put it in to perspective Steam downloads are averaging 1.4mbps. I was just wondering if I upgrade my wireless pci-e to a dual band ac adapter would this help my download speed or am I just cursed with a poor residential area?

In case it helps I currently have the BT Smart hub.

It's worth doing a speedtest (www.speedtest.net) on a pc or your laptop plugged into the router by network cable. That'll give you your highest internet speeds possible on your line.

Then do a test on your wifi and that'll show you if there's any degredation in wireless performance.

Wireless n isn't going to give an noticeable difference in internet speeds over ac as you're not ever going to get an internet connection at 300mbs yet. The only time you'll be restricted compared to AC is when doing internal transfers of large files over the network from one pc to another when the transfer be able to make use of the max speeds your card allows.

Just checking, did you attach the antenna that came with the welcome pack?

Thanks for the help! I'll make sure to do this once I get home and try it. I did attach both antennas that came, I was unsure if I'm only supposed to connect one though.

Both is correct. That's something people often miss.

It's likely your speeds are just down to a poor line unfortunately.

Also the noise on the phone line can make your internet speed slow - on BT hub u can actually check what noise it is, of course the low it is the better. If it is way big then phone BT and ask them to check the line, it is also a good idea to get them to pass it to the wholesale team - they are the 3rd line team and really good at there job they are able to make adjustments remotely to your line to help your internet speed
