Windows Versions

Why are versions of Windows coming out so frequently? XP had a 6 year gap before vista, which was horrible so there was a 3 year gap to 7. Why is it again only 3 years from 7 to Windows Phone 7 Desktop edition *cough* I mean Windows 8? It doesn't suck compared to what W8 looks like it will do so.

I think 2-3 years is about the norm as far as gaps between OS versions go. W95 (95), W98 (98), ME (2000) XP (2001), Vista (2006), W7 (2009), W9 (2012)

it's really only going back to the frequency with which new windows operating systems were released up to vista

/wheels out old argument that XP was so awesome it didnt need changing in the normal 3 years :) (not my opinion, just the usual fanboy stuff!)

If you look prior to XP, what were the gaps? 95 - 98 - 2000 - (ME LOL) - XP was...a bit after that?

So we are just back to the norm now right?

I actually liked XP personally, I never had any issues with it, or the service packs. I wouldn't go back to it though, not after using W7.

I would have no issues at all using XP again though for non-personal reasons.

XP had a long spell because it was successful and vista had a short spell because it was unsuccessful, although windows 7 wont be in long even though its pretty good

ME - That's hilarious. But I don't feel skipping so fast does 7 justice. I understand the 3 year gaps but the Windows XP gap was great. Vista sucked so I'm glad it's gone. Which is annoying as my DDRW died after I had to restore to it when I had a faff up on my laptop...

IKR I don't want windows 8 atm... I hear an owl outside :D

I think they may be releasing W8 so they can completely phase out vista, they usually have 2 OSs fully compatible and a few months after W8 release, compatibility for vistamwill be lot, like XP now with IE9 (it no longer works)

vista had a short spell because it was unsuccessful

lol wut?

If tracked between January and April, the number represents about 10 million copies of Vista sold per month in the first third of 2008 and signals a slight increase in the sales rate for the operating system, which averaged at just over 9 million copies sold per month in 2007. However, the sales rate is half that of the Windows update's initial results in the first two months of its launch, when it sold as many as 20 million copies per month to cater to early demand.

Can i be selling something that "unsuccessful" please!

? Vista was awesome. Never had a single issue and was a massive improvment on XP to support.

I fear the problem is not Vista with that one :p Never heard a genuine, repeatable issue with Vista stand up to closer inspection that wasnt user error or insufficient hardware related, sometimes both.

Not had an issue with Java on Vista, you know Vista and 7 pretty much share the same Kernal, they are the same in all but name and default settings / system requirements.

They are so similar most Vista drivers work on 7.

Well it may be based on the vista kernel but it has a ton of bug fixes, looks better and doesn't bsod for turning on

I find them a lot different, on the same system i found w7 to rarely crash whereas it was a common feature wih vista, there is also a lot more cutsomization with w7 and isnjust smarter
