Just bought 2 new pcs, neither had the windows product key sticker on.

My old pc which had Windows 7 originally had a key on a sticker. I neededto input it when I had to reinstall windows after a drive failure, and when I layer replaced the mobo and graphics card.

Do things work differently now?

Windows 10 changed things with regards to registration. Win 10 has no product key..it is tied to the hardware and is automatically detected if, for example, you reinstall Windows. If, in the future, you buy a new system, you simply tie your Windows licence to a Microsoft account and it can be transferred. It is so much easier with Windows 10...I can still "fondly" remember crawling around on the floor with a Jewellers Loupe trying to read the Windows sticker on the back of the computer!!
Which I can only assume looked like this at your house...
