Hi all, I hope you had a good xmas and ny!
I have a major problem which I need urgent help with.
One day my pc crashed on me which I had to turn it off by the mains and now it keeps on freezing at Welcome screen.
I was lucky to actually got in so I re installed Windows but still it keeps on happening.
I've got it to work by going into safe mode which I just did today.

Ok if youre running a fermi card, gtx 400 or 500 series plz follow my instructions below:

http://www.evga.com/forums/tm.aspx?m=586183

^Either follow the link above or read on for the BETTER way to sort this out.

It has been found that the onboard HD audio on teh fermi cards often causes the random black screen, and ALSO the situation when you try to log in (get to the Welcome screen with the spinner) and it just blocks there, and you have to push the reset button.

Both of these issues have been found to be because of teh HD Audio in device manager, so disable every single one or better still follow these instructions:

Uninstall the display driver.
Restart computer.
Download the driver version 260.99
Install this but choose CUSTOM
Tick every box EXCEPT the HD Audio driver.
Reboot.

No more freezing of the spinner next to 'Welcome' when logging in.

I have had first hand experience of the windows logon freeze, the only way to get round it is indeed to boot in safemode. It would appear even teh latest drivers still havent fixed this issue, hence the updated installer and teh ability NOT to install the HD Audio driver.

Thanks for the reply, I'm still in safe mode. Which driver do I uninstall? Is it the Display Control Panel?

Head to device manager, under display adapter, uninstall the Nvidia GeForce GTX4XX or 5XX GPU you own. Btw which gpu is it you have?

Ok, yep deffinatly the case.

Under Sound Controllers you would see the NVIDIA HD Audio, but I wouldnt bother disabling them like the link says but rather uninstalling the drivers completely, rebooting and the installing the latest 260.99 drivers for 400 series GPUs, select Custom install, and tick everthing except the HD Audio drivers.

This should fix your issue for you.

I'm still having the problem.
I ticked the box "delete the software for this device". Was that a bad idea to do and also in control panel NVIDIA drivers installed date is not today like the other ones.

No, dont worry, deleting software is what needs to be done.

If you pm me and download TeamViewer 6, when im home (at about 13:00) I can do it again for you, and check that the Nvidia HD AUdio Driver didnt managed ot install itself anyway, (the little swine...).

By the way, the driver date is date of release & not that of when you installed it :)

Edit: Excellent news!

This time youll have to ring them up on 0844 499 4000 and ask for an advanced replacement im afraid :(

In the meantime you can try and use the 2nd DVI port instead of teh first (im presuming youre using DVI) and this may temporarily resolve your issue while you wait for the new GPU
