Windows 11 boot issue

Well, that new-to-W11-experience has just gone south very quickly...:cautious:

Decided to do a clean install of the Nvidia drivers as I'd just been updating them each time since I installed the 3080Ti, and thought that may resolve the lower numbers I'm seeing in TimeSpy.

Set the system to start in safe mode...nothing...just constant loading screen (the circle of dots)...waited 30 minutes before turning it off.

Tried the same a few times, same thing.

Turned fast boot off in bios and tried using my W11 boot USB...same thing.

Can't get into W11 proper, nor into Safe Mode, nor can I get into recovery options, nor can I get into startup repair via the boot drive or the W11 install USB.

If I can't even boot from a USB, then I can't even format & reinstall!

Don't know why MS ever thought removing the safe mode start-up key sequence and needing a working system to initiate it

Any ideas?

If this is the case, it's not booting from the USB, it's completely separate from the installer.

You'd likely need to run a startup repair from USB, there's probably a flag not set correctly.

Sorry, this should probably be in its own thread...feel free to move/merge.

So how do you get to the start-up repair if no available OS is loading?

Can't make another recovery drive as I can't get into the OS to create one ;)

You boot off the installation media.
That's what's on the USB stick, that won't boot

The m.2 that the OS is on won't boot; the start-up repair/recovery doesn't come up; the W11 install boot USB won't boot (despite it working to do the original upgrade install yesterday), and the OS working all this morning to do the TimeSpy testing!

I reckon it's down to the lack of thermal paste and rgb strips..................

Fixed it!

Thought it was strange that the boot m.2 and the Windows installer USB worked on my NUC, so started stripping it down.

Looks like it's due to a dodgy Ironwolf Pro HDD that I use for backups. Disconnected that and it booted right up!

Might be just a cabling issue (as the cables are very tightly packed in the back of a 200T), but I could hear it spinning up, but turned off the fans on everything and I could just about hear - considering these are supposed to be quite loud drives - a cyclic ramp up/down of the HDD every 5 seconds.

Weird, not come across that before

Me neither, otherwise I'd have tried it before admitting defeat and posting it on here o_O

I'll take it out when I have some more time (away tomorrow & Monday), and put it into an external caddy to check it out.

My day of gaming has not gone well 🤬

One thing I did notice when I was checking everything out, was the 3080Ti was VERY hot even when sitting there on the trying-to-start-up screen! Checked the temp as soon as it was working again, and it was showing 62ºc whilst doing very little.

I've also realised what a PITA having an m.2 running the OS, when it's attached directly to the motherboard, as to remove it I had to remove the GPU, and my Asus 4 x m.2 card, then the cover over the m.2 fan, then the cover over the m.2 itself...just to disconnect it to see if that had failed (it hadn't), and then I put it in another PC and it worked fine.

I knew there was a reason I stuck to Mac ;)

Lols, on a Mac the SSD is soldered onto the board!
Exactly. Can't do anything about it, so it either works or doesn't!

Not like a PC, where it can be any of the myriad of components from different manufacturers causing the issue!

No good for gaming though (unless the games get recompiled for ARM).

Can't really complain though, as I've had a faultless (other than the daft cabling) experience since I ordered it 2 years ago...just strange that the moment I move over to W11 it all goes kaput!

...gets stranger...my TimeSpy scores have returned to almost where they were (within about 100 points)
