Win 10 startup from CD Rom?

I have a Vortex laptop. Had issues starting this monring (now resolved) but found cannot get laptop to boot from CD rom Windows Disk. Works fine in older desktop. Finally found how to get into BIOS but does not seem to have same options as previous versions. How do I enable a CD Rom startup if I cannot get Windows to boot?

Many thanks

Set the computer to boot from the external drive
1. With the bootable CD/DVD/USB flash drive containing the BIOS files in your CD/DVD drive/USB port, restart the
computer and press F2 (in most cases) to enter the BIOS.
2. Use the arrow keys to highlight the Boot menu.
3. Use the “+” and “-” keys to move boot devices up and down the priority order.
4. Make sure that the CD/DVD drive/USB flash drive is set first in the boot priority of the BIOS.
5. Press F4 to save any changes you have made and exit the BIOS to restart the computer.

Hi

Had been into BIOS using F2 but Boot section has:

Boot Option Priorities
Boot Option #1 [UEFI IP4 Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller]
Boot Option #2 [UEFI IP6 Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller]
Boot Option #3 [Windows Boot Manager]

The dropdown options are those 3 or Disabled. No mention of CD Rom

Just a thought - would amending the order and putting Windows Boot Manager first help?

OK disabled UEFI Boot and options appear and putting following order from choices :

B TSST corp CDPVDW etc
WDC -hard disk
Realtek PXE b05 etc

Putting this order allows a boot from CD roam but then no boot if a cd rom not in drive and you have to re enable UEFI Boot.

any ideas as this seems very cumbersome but some sort of solution at least?

Afraid not it seems.

I now have to:

Go into BIOS and disable UEFI
Reboot and go back into BIOS and then CD ROM can be chosen as first boot device
Can only boot with a CD Rom in drive not otherwise

For normal booting I need to go into BIOS and enable UEFI and restart. Windows Boot Manager is only choice now for booting.

It works but boy is this a backward step

I suspect the problem is SecureBoot not UEFI. I would try leaving UEFI enabled but disable SecureBoot.

Disabling UEFI of course also disables SecureBoot.

That combination UEFI enabled and Secureboot disabled is what I have but only shows Windows Boot Manager and not the choices to booting.

Obviously some limitations of this BIOS

I would not need to boot from CD except in an emergency so at least of have a way of doing so if Windows decides not to start for any reason

I'd be tempted to disable UEFI completely and do a clean reinstall (using MBR and not GPT)

I'm stuck on a black logon screen after a bsod error - doc_watchdog_violation. Which means I cant c logon screen to log into windows, hence no access to windows to enable safe mode from within windows. And no option to boot from windows recovery disk to repair anything.

This uefi bios is CRAP. I don't believe the standard home end user requires this. A standard bios is more efficient for problem solving. I think I'm gonna have to disable uefi and do fresh install on cam legacy bios if I can't logon very soon!

Good luck to anyone who gets stuck!

You could do the 2 stage BIOS change I tried to allow CD Rom boot. Stage one is boot into BIOS and disable UEFI and then re start and boot into BIOS again and then you can see an option to boot using CD Rom if that is what you want.

However I find that to later revert to normal booting you have to boot into BIOS again and re enable UEFI.

If u disable uefi, then your current windows installation cannot be accessed. U have to run a new install.

Disabling UEFi does allow CD-ROM boot option, but as I said , your current windows is not accessible. Then r enabling uefi takes you back to the problem u had in the first place, I been playing with this all day nearly.
Doing a system restore now. Hopefully that works.

It's to do with how the mbr is partition I think. UEFI is summat to do with gpt partitions. I not too knowledgable on that side.

I think that is what I said - the option I described is to allow you to boot from a CD Rom to get at a rescue disk etc if Windows will not start.

I have no idea how you would install Windows to have a different BIOS and not going to do that now.

If u switch uefi off, u cannot access your existing windows install hence u can not create a recovery disk for that install of windows or u can't repair that install of windows because u can't access it. If u switch uefi off u must do a new fresh install which means any work saved on the previous install will be lost as u will need to create new partitions on a legacy boot after switching off uefi because the disk is configure in gpt mode not mbr.

But you create the rescue disk when windows installed and working or at least I did. This issue arises when you later need to use the rescue disk.
