When to do clean install for windows updates?

Recently purchased a pc from PCS and have read things about needing a clean windows install for some updates. My partner has recently 'updated and shut down' without taking much notice!

I'm looking for a few pointers of when a full install is required and what happens if I don't?

It's just once a year on a major version upgrade. The latest is labelled 21h1, they're year 21 then which half of the year H1

So long as you clean installed that version, then yes.
