I'm getting a pc in the next 6 months and was wondering what antivirus software everyone uses and why ? I want to be protected but don't want notifications every 5mins telling me something I don't need to know.

Thanks

I too can recommend this :) Its pretty decent too and Barclays Online also gives you access to the mobile phone version for free too :)
..Hell... Its probably even worth opening an account with them just to get it lol...

Microsoft security Essentials does not come with nor work on Windows 8, instead there is Windows Defender, which after setting up on someone's laptop, looks exactly the same as security Essentials.

Still very good and easy to use.

LFFPicard is correct - basically you don't need to worry about getting anti-virus for Windows 8, as it's installed as standard, and you don't even notice it as it just runs and updates in the background. (Nice that we're now a long way from the days of AVG pestering the user all the time for updates and new versions...)

It is possible to install 3rd party anti-virus if you want, but I see no reason to.

Yeah, but I thought the the link I gave in post 4 already explained that. :)

It may have - though your summary just said MS SE didn't work with Windows 8, not that Windows 8 had its own anti-virus built in. So I guess that's why LFFPicard and I gave our responses, to clarify the situation - not everyone will be reading all the links posted, if it isn't clear there is an additional answer given it that link :)

The link clearly says in the first sentence,"Windows 8 comes with Windows Defender, which has been improved in Windows 8 to provide the same level of malware protection as Microsoft Security Essentials." so I didn't see any need to say any more. But yes,no harm in clarifying, :)

lol, I have kaspersky 2013 too and must admit it seems to be relatively good.

I use Kaspersky have done since 2005 and I've always thought it fairly good. Much better than Norton or Mcafee, however I've been told AVG is better. There is also a free version of AVG for both PC and smart phones.

I think i've tried most of the free ones and found that many seem to give me little issues. Kaspersky has never gave me any issues at all.

Thats just the basic anti-virus though isnt it? Rather than an all-round security package (anti-virus/malware/adware)

the thing with kaspersky is its a good program, and if you are with barclays and use online banking, its free!
I joked about opening an account with barclays to get it...but in theory... thats perfectly possible! (Get a free basic account, sign up for online banking (also free) and away you go!)
Not that i am recommending a mass-exodus to barclays for free internet security...

Malwarebytes is probably the best program out for detecting malware, adware, and spyware, and it's also free. :)
