Vortex Series: 17.3" Underperforming

I bought the Vortex Series: 17.3" in September and the games seemed to run fine. However I've noticed that the games (Metal Gear Solid: The Phantom Pain and The Witcher 3) I play are suffering with a significant drop in FPS when the game gets busy.

These are the specifications:
Intel® Core™i7 Quad Core Mobile Extreme i7-4940MX (3.10GHz) 8MB
32GB HyperX IMPACT 1600MHz SODIMM DDR3 (4 x 8GB)
NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 980M - 8.0GB DDR5 Video RAM - DirectX® 12
1TB WD BLUE 2.5" WD10JPVX, SATA 6 Gb/s, 8MB CACHE (5400 rpm)

With these specifications, I'd be expecting a consistently high 50-60FPS on most games.

What would you recommend to improve the laptop performance?

Have you upgraded to Windows 10? If so did you install drivers? If not did you order the laptop with or without os?

Have you monitored your temps?

My laptop arrived with Windows 10 and everything was working fine. It just seems that in the past month or so, the performance has progressively gotten worse. MGS: TPP is known for being optimised well, so I was surprised when the game dipped hugely during an intensive battle, something that shouldn't be happening with my hardware.

Which graphics driver are you on? The last 2 releases have been borked and the current one is actually a rushed through beta driver to try to correct the previous issue, but the general advice is to roll back to a previous version for now.

Also what settings are you using in game?

The witcher on Ultra Settings at 1080 resolution with a GTX980m should be capable of between 28 to 35 frames per second.

The guy in this video has a good tutorial on how to get 60fps out of it

As for the Phantom Pain i think it should be able to able to 56-60 fps.

Again video here showing the guys settings for example

Hope this maybe helps.

I'm currently using the 364.51 driver (the latest I believe). Which driver would you recommend?

I originally had MGS: TPP running at a solid 60FPS until recently. I haven't changed any system settings. It just seems to have a much lowered performance than what I was originally getting.

I believe the last stable driver was 359.something, the one before the 364's
I swear, every issue I have with computers, you have the solution! The problem was fixed immediately.

There was one thing I noticed though. My CPU is barely being used when I'm playing video games. I was playing MGS: TPP to test the performance and it was only using roughly 4-8% of my CPU. Does that affect my performance at all or does it not matter?

Glad the frame rate issue is solved. Nvidia should never have released the second beta, they should have just suggested the rollback.

It would be worth checking your temps while idle and in game just to verify the system is running correctly. You can use hwmonitor or speccy, both free.

I used Speccy to monitor the temperatures, and they average around 55-70 (maximum) when playing MGS: TPP. I don't know if the CPU makes a difference, but it barely gets used in-game.

What are your cpu temps? It looks as though the system is running as it should be but checking the temps of the cpu will tell you for sure.
