Vortex IV Review-ish

OK..

I'm not the kindest person when it comes to experiences but I don't go out of my way to be unkind.

The keyboard placement, maybe is just my hands but the keys are too far apart or maybe the keys themselves are too small and the visual mean I don't see them. The result is that I miss type far more than is normal. Not a problem really as it could just be what I'm used to. The sunken down means the keyboard means the user means it will take more effort. again, this is just my opinion.

The screen is very nice and clean where in some cases the only issue means I need to turn the brightness down to roughly 70-80%. However, the (vertical) viewing angle is pretty sharp.

Heating with a i7 really means it's worth getting as many vents as possible. I like to go to cafes or just reply while chilling on my bed. The CPU fan is not terribly loud, but would suspect once dust/dirt will increase the levels. For the hardware, I'd say the noise and amount of use is probably valid for sitting in a warm room on me. :)

The frame of the machine, I'm not sure about between the screen means I'll have to be very careful lifting the screen open/close. Same with the DVD/BD drive because the plastic on the underside is a bit flexible. The keypad is showing wear already. The buttons work, but as the scanner is in the middle is not the most user friendly to use.

The speakers are pretty lame. The sound quality via headphones is very good and that is where I'll be using it so all is well.

After having the machine for almost a week, and admittedly it hasn't had much use, it seems to be holding up to general use. Please don't look at this as a negative view, only in what one person has noticed on one person. Similar things were seen on a Lenovo T61 and that lasted me from roughly 2008 until just before 2014. No pictures were included because the Vortex is covered enough already.

One other thing. When closing the 'lid' it's well worth putting a thumb or finger between the lid and 'base' so there's some sort of of cushion.

I'm not exactly sorry I can't give the Vortex a glowing review beyond what the monitor shows. What I can do is suggest that for the price point, it is well worth buying as long as long as the user has done research and knows what to expect. Knowing what I know now, I'd probably get one of the Ultranotes. What's that expression of hind-site? Oh well I'm sure this will work me for a few years to come. If you're wondering, the review is not because of what I was expecting, but only what I see. In terms of speed, it's very fast and generally quiet. For a powerhouse laptop, you probably can't do better.

Reviews can always be useful regardless of positivity or negativity so don't apologise for that:) However there are some odd things in here I just don't really understand:

I like to go to cafes or just reply while chilling on my bed.
Why did you get a Vortex then?

The keypad is showing wear already.
After one week of not really using it?? Send it back then. I've had mine almost a year of constant use and the keyboard looks like new.

After having the machine for almost a week, and admittedly it hasn't had much use, it seems to be holding up to general use.
Why not wait to review it when you've used it a bit more then?

When closing the 'lid' it's well worth putting a thumb or finger between the lid and 'base' so there's some sort of of cushion.
How come? Again I've had mine a year and never done such thing and never had any issue, nor thought they may be an issue.

Knowing what I know now, I'd probably get one of the Ultranotes.
But the Ultranote doesn't have a GPU in it. The Vortex is a gaming laptop designed for gaming. The ultranote is for portability... they're not fulfilling the same niche in the market and aren't competing laptops. I have to question again why you bought a Vortex. Seems you needed to do more research before purchasing.

Anyway, will be interesting to see what you think once you've used it a bit more.

Instead of saying how wonderful the performance, screen and overall look of the Vortex IV, which has been covered pretty well in other reviews, this device was looked at and what might be issues, if not deal breakers, were noted.

Fair enough comments though, but the main reason I looked at a laptop was not mobility. Could probably have bought a mobile laptop before, but for the sheer wear and tear factor something stronger was appealing. Looking at the pictures does not give a true picture of a machine. Neither do "Look at my perfect new laptop" type of comments. I made a bet, lost on a few fronts, won on others. But am generally am happy with the laptop as it does fit the needs.

1) The reason I got the Vortex is because, among sitting in cafés and sitting around replying, I do some graphics work while sitting in cafés where access to the extra welly of a better CPU and GPU is useful as is the extra ventilation.

2) A bit of wear on the touch pad is not really a big deal just surprising because it hasn't had much use. Use a wireless mouse most of the time anyway because of basic preference and button placement which wasn't clear in the images.

3) The "wait to review it when you've used it a bit more then?" is not really valid in that my level of 'use' may not be the same as others. Does a person really need to go into the fine details of saying "This laptop survived two bus trips, sitting running pretty hard during upgrades, working for a couple hours in a café, and hours idling"?
Based on a fair number of comments and looks, the Vortex has better ventilation than the Optimus V, and has better memory future capacity. Looking at the comparison sheet only one between the main three I looked at: Ultranote, Optimus, Vortex to present HDMI as a second video port.
http://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/compare-laptops/?compare[3877]=on&compare[3963]=on&compare[3598]=on
The only one of the three (before I found it was recessed to much to be much use) to have a fingerprint scanner.

4) Maybe there is no need to put a finger or thumb in when closing the lid but based on the behaviour, I prefer to do this because the lid(at least in mine) does not seem to have a soft close ability. This was expensive so will be around for long term use. If the hardware of other people works better, great! If not, this may solve a problem.

5) This laptop was bought because of what the specs and case design as well as the price offered. And also that it seemed to be closest to the laptop (in concept if not looks) I had before (i.e. be familiar for work-flows, if not identical) which fits the needs the closest.

Good review, dv8tion242. I'm currently considering a Vortex IV and your review pointing out possible flaws is much more useful to me than (as you rightly say) "Look at my perfect new laptop" comments. Nice one.
