OK..
I'm not the kindest person when it comes to experiences but I don't go out of my way to be unkind.
The keyboard placement, maybe is just my hands but the keys are too far apart or maybe the keys themselves are too small and the visual mean I don't see them. The result is that I miss type far more than is normal. Not a problem really as it could just be what I'm used to. The sunken down means the keyboard means the user means it will take more effort. again, this is just my opinion.
The screen is very nice and clean where in some cases the only issue means I need to turn the brightness down to roughly 70-80%. However, the (vertical) viewing angle is pretty sharp.
Heating with a i7 really means it's worth getting as many vents as possible. I like to go to cafes or just reply while chilling on my bed. The CPU fan is not terribly loud, but would suspect once dust/dirt will increase the levels. For the hardware, I'd say the noise and amount of use is probably valid for sitting in a warm room on me.
The frame of the machine, I'm not sure about between the screen means I'll have to be very careful lifting the screen open/close. Same with the DVD/BD drive because the plastic on the underside is a bit flexible. The keypad is showing wear already. The buttons work, but as the scanner is in the middle is not the most user friendly to use.
The speakers are pretty lame. The sound quality via headphones is very good and that is where I'll be using it so all is well.
After having the machine for almost a week, and admittedly it hasn't had much use, it seems to be holding up to general use. Please don't look at this as a negative view, only in what one person has noticed on one person. Similar things were seen on a Lenovo T61 and that lasted me from roughly 2008 until just before 2014. No pictures were included because the Vortex is covered enough already.
One other thing. When closing the 'lid' it's well worth putting a thumb or finger between the lid and 'base' so there's some sort of of cushion.
I'm not exactly sorry I can't give the Vortex a glowing review beyond what the monitor shows. What I can do is suggest that for the price point, it is well worth buying as long as long as the user has done research and knows what to expect. Knowing what I know now, I'd probably get one of the Ultranotes. What's that expression of hind-site? Oh well I'm sure this will work me for a few years to come. If you're wondering, the review is not because of what I was expecting, but only what I see. In terms of speed, it's very fast and generally quiet. For a powerhouse laptop, you probably can't do better.
