Vortex IV 15.6" headphones not working

Hi Everyone, I just received my new laptop. The speakers work, but if I plug in headphones, no sound comes out of them, and the sound still comes out the speakers. I get a pop up box telling me I have plugged something into the jack, but that's it. If I plug the headphones into the mic jack, sound comes out headphones and the speakers, but I can't isolate them. Any ideas?
