Hey guys,
Since the i7-3740QM (2.70GHz) was out of stock, it has given me additional time to reflect upon my specs and before I knew it, I started asking myself "Do I really need this?".
My specs are:
Processor (CPU) Intel® Core™i7 Quad Core Mobile Processor i7-3740QM (2.70GHz) 6MB
Memory (RAM) 16GB KINGSTON HYPER-X GENESIS 1600MHz SODIMM DDR3 (2 x 8GB)
Graphics Card NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 675MX - 4.0GB DDR5 Video RAM - DirectX® 11
1st Hard Disk 240GB KINGSTON HYPERX 3K SSD, SATA 6 Gb/s (upto 555MB/sR | 510MB/sW)
2nd Hard Disk 1TB SEAGATE HYBRID GEN3 SSHD Drive, SATA 6 Gb/s, 64MB CACHE (5400 rpm)
A little bit about me:
I'm a video editor/Machinima producer aspiring to delve into the world of VFX and 3D which I will be taking up at a BA level starting September. As aforementioned Machinima, I'm a Gamer and like to exploit game engines as mediums for movie making until I'm accomplished enough to fully rely on my own creations. Frequently used programs include Maya, After Effects, Houdini, Photoshop etc.
My reasoning behind my specs was to aim for "soft spots", the middle ground of all the ranges available to me to create a badass all rounder of a machine. Although since the delays gave me time to commit to some further research on the parts I configured, I noticed that the processor in particular (which was out of stock) might be an unnecessary luxury. The 3740QM 2.7 shows hardly any significance over the 3630QM 2.4 despite the 99 GBP difference in price and the +300Mhz. Although I did read that the 2.7 does give an approximate of 10% superior performance to the latter in terms of render times which will be crucial for me. Although that extra 100 GBP that can be saved from the amend to the 2.4 could be used in switching the GTX675MX to the GTX680M.
At the moment I do believe the GPU upgrade is a much more efficient option here but for some reason I can't shake my doubtfulness due to my lack of knowledge PC configurations. As an aspiring 3D artist, would a superior GPU reward me more over the more powerful CPU? I've toiled for many months to finally save up enough for this laptop so I feel I have to get this right. I'm sure someone out there understands this.
I'm not sure how I ended up typing so much...
tl;dr
i7-3740QM (2.70GHz) + GTX675MX
or
i7-3630QM (2.40GHz) + GTX680M
(If there is a PCS admin out there, could you estimate how much this switcheroo would cost me if I were to amend the order?)
If you read through it all, THANK YOU!
(UPDATE)
I just noticed the Vortex IV popped up on the configuration screen introducing the new 4th gen Processors. Is it at all possible to have those installed in a still under construction Vortex III?
