Vortex III 17.3" Geforce 680M GTX Code 43 error

Hi there, I hope everyone reading this had a fantastic Christmas.

An issue had cropped up with my Vortex III 17.3" a few days ago. All of a sudden games would fail to load. Upon further inspection my Geforce 680M was highlighted with a yellow exclamation mark in Device Manager; the properties of the device reads as follows:

"Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)."

I had upgraded the decide drivers to 353.xx in September and had absolutely no problems whatsoever. I had been playing Fallout 4 up until a few days ago.

I have attempted the following this far with no success:

  • Uninstalled drivers via the device manager and reinstalled the Nvidia 361.xx drivers.
  • Uninstalled drivers via the Nvidia Display Driver Uninstaller and reinstalled Nvidia 361.xx
  • Uninstalled drivers via the Nvidia Display Driver Uninstaller and reinstalled the drivers provided with the system disk
  • Updated windows
  • Checked BIOS settings

Upon uninstalling drivers with DDU, the 680M appears as a "Standard VGA Graphics Adapter" and displays the error "This device cannot start. (code 10)" in the device properties.

The BIOS still displays the display adapter as an NVidia Geforce 680M. The bios revision is 1.00.05.

Regardless the issue remains unresolved. I have not yet formatted the system as I rely on it for work. I am concerned that I may have a dead GPU and my 3 year gold warranty expired a few months ago. I would greatly appreciate any advice.

Thank you for your help.

- Dan

Have you tried going back to the 353.xx driver that worked fine in September? It's always wise in situations like this to go back to a state that you know worked, even if it's less than ideal. You know that the software environment you had in September worked, so if it doesn't work now it's probably a hardware fault.

Hi Ubuysa,

I have done so by using DDU (no restore point available), however I had not updated windows or drivers since September.. the only meaningful software change was the redistributables installed with Fallout 4, however I would be amazed if they were to blame. The system worked fine for several days after installing and playing Fallout 4.

I have a P370EM with SLI 680M's running the same drivers and Fallout 4 with no issues. I am still in the hope that this is a software issue but have no idea what else I can try at this point :(

Original post updated. Upon uninstalling drivers with DDU, the 680M appears as a "Standard VGA Graphics Adapter" and displays the error "This device cannot start. (code 10)" in the device properties.

Still no joy :(

The BIOS still displays the display adapter as an NVidia Geforce 680M. The bios revision is 1.00.05.

I'm not familiar with DDU. Personally I'd simply delete the 680M in Device Manager and delete the driver too when asked, then reboot (Windows will install a basic driver) and then I'd install the 353.xx driver that you know works.
