This is a rough spec that I should be ordering in a couple of days and it will be used mostly for gaming/uni work but not sure about a few things.

I wasn't to sure which cooling stand to go for but can anyone confirm that the one I have chosen plugs into a usb port?

Do I gain any benefit for having 2x4gb of ram rather than 1x8gb?

Is the 780 worth the extra money over the 770?
Would either have the 780 or a 770 with an ssd or something.

Thankyou in advance.

Looks good :)
I went with the Zalman ZM-NC3500 which seems to work very well, not very noisy.

Only if you are planning to go for more than 8gb in the future.

It is significantly better gaming wise.
If you can push your budget I would suggest the killer 1202 wireless card.

Hey Jacktimson

Im struggline to poke any holes in your spec its pretty good as it stands.

Im not sure if the ram makes much different, i've heard that PC's work better on 2 X 4GB than 1 X 8GB but not sure of the science behind it could be rubbish.

As for the GPU i wouldn't change it, the GPU cannot be upgraded easily and the GTX780m is a boss. Click the links below for the performance predictions

GTX 780M

GTX 770M

Crysis 3 for instance your getting an extra 20-30 FPS on high settings so i would say its worth the money.

As for Hard Drives the 17" has the capacity for 2 Drives without loosing the Optical drive, my sudgestion would be to stick with the 750GB WD SCORPIO BLACK WD7500BPKT, SATA 3 Gb/s, 16MB CACHE (7200 rpm) as its a fast drive, i use one and think the loading times are amazing, if at a later date you would like an SSD then its not too difficult to add this.

Hope this helps

Thank you for the replies.
What would be better if I was planning on increasing the ram in the future? Order now with 2x4gb or 1x8gb.

How much better is the killer wireless card? My internet isn't amazing so any gain in signal strength would be welcome.

What about the thermal paste? Is there any need for the £ 9 one or is the standard one fine?

Just waiting to get my 10% deposit back from my failed finance application and I will be ordering. Im going to go for 1x8gb of ram, the 780, the better cooling paste and the wireless killer card. Thankyou guys for the input and rep to both of you :)

Infodump time! DDR1/2/3 are designed, typically, to run in Dual Channel (sometimes Triple or Quad). Each module runs on a 64-bit bus, but since you're running two together they pretend to be one large module with a 128-bit bus. This means that twice as much data can be read/written at any one time. For example, DDR3-1600 can write at 64000MB/s per module; if you only have the one module, you can read/write at 6400MB/s, but if you're running in dual-channel then you can read/write at 12,800MB/s. This doesn't sound useful at first, since even the fastest SSDs can only read at 550MB/s, but it's very handy for stuff being moved from CPU <-> RAM <-> PCI-E, which can make use of that speed.

Now, it depends on what you're doing whether the extra speed is useful - if gaming, then it can entirely depend on the game but it's not usually enough of a difference to say whether you should go dual-channel or not.
